RatePoint makes recommendations social

Visit the just-launched ratings site RatePoint, and I'll bet that you'll think exactly what I thought: "Hey, this reminds me of Digg." Indeed, the two have similar site designs and similar philosophies: rank the importance or effectiveness of something through sheer people power. In the case of Digg, it's news stories. With RatePoint, it's everything else--Web sites, services, products, and pretty much anything else that's available online.

But there are a few differences between Digg and RatePoint. Instead of the simple thumbs up/thumbs down protocol that Digg is modeled off, RatePoint offers … Read more

Buzzvote: Polling widgets for your blog

Buzzvote is a free polling service that lets users create and share their own polls. Once made, users can share their polls through a variety of social bookmarking sites like Del.icio.us, Digg and Furl. You can also embed the poll in any Web page or blog. There are other services that do this, including BlogPoll and Pollpub, but Buzzvote has a really simple and easy-to-use interface.

After registering (which doesn't require your e-mail address), Buzzvote will keep track of all the items you've voted on, as well as show you current results for each. What it'… Read more

Where's Digg for music? Right here

When Digg 3.0 launched in December we wondered where the capability to Digg music was. We were led to believe it was coming, but Web 2.0 abhors a vacuum. There are already a few Digg-like services for music. Today I took a look at BandBuzz, iJigg, and ChartU.

None of these sites plays music from major labels, which is frustrating, because you'll miss hearing from artists who have signed recording contracts (unless their managers get with the program and start uploading tracks). But it's also wonderful, since it lets smaller indie bands bubble up in a … Read more

Digg in 3D

Flash guru Michael Battle has created a 3D version of Digg. You can zoom around all the popular stories on Digg's technology page using your mouse and scroll wheel. It's not exactly the most useful interface, but it's a ton of fun and it's very slick. If you get lost, just refresh your browser. There's also a complete list of advanced navigation instructions here.

Seeing Web sites in 3D reminded me of the 1995 movie Hackers, where a young Jesse Bradford hacks into a complex computer network by flying around a magical city of what … Read more

Boxxet packages the Web for you

We recently covered Daylife, a beautifully designed (some would say overdesigned) guide to the day's news. We called it the "anti-Digg," due to its editor-driven content and its focus on design. Today, another content packager launches: Boxxet.

Boxxet collects information on popular topics--sports teams, popular TV shows, consumer products, and so on. Each Boxxet topic (or set) gets links to related news stories, photos, stuff to buy, a Digg-like list of bookmarks, forums, and its own RSS feed.

The organizational scheme is good, and the pages are easy to navigate considering the amount of info they … Read more

Could Daylife be the anti-Digg?

Often, the companies that present at the NY Tech Meetup are in a fledgling pre-beta phase and haven't received a whole lot of buzz. But one of the featured New York start-ups at Tuesday night's January meetup has gotten a whole lot of coverage among tech blogs since it launched last week: Daylife, a news aggregator that comes up with creative ways to visualize the people, places, organizations, and events that shape today's headlines. You might recognize its technology from the NewsRanker feature on the popular news blog Huffington Post--Daylife is all about using cool graphs, … Read more

New Digg features coming today. Digg Music still AWOL

Digg is getting a refresh today. The big changes are in video, which will now be differentiated from news, and a podcasting category also has been added. The interface and the front page will be improved, and the personal profiles will get some navigation fixes.

Podcasting The fundamentally new feature with this release is Digg's podcasting category. Podcasts will be playable from within the Digg Web site. Video podcasts will be playable as well.

Diggers will be able to Digg up podcast feeds (complete podcast series, for example, TWiT or CNET's Buzz Out Loud). Inside the Digg page … Read more

How to get on the front page of Digg

Want to get on the front page of Digg? Everybody does. Digg drives massive amounts of traffic to tech stories, video clips, and new companies. Here's the best recipe yet for getting coverage: Write about Digg itself. To wit: Elinor Mills' story on News.com about gaming Digg through the use of other social sites, paid placement, and shills. No sooner did it post than it rocketed to the front page of Digg itself. The story is here: The big Digg rig.

Are there two new PSPs on the way?

The Sony news these days might be split evenly between PS3 buzz and battery-recall woes, but a new rumor's starting to swirl over at Digg: are there new PSPs on the way? Apparently there are two new models in the works, one with a hard drive and one with lots of Flash memory. The whispers appear to have originated at YouNewb, and Diggers are generally cynical. Is it believable? And if so, is a new PSP needed?

"PSP2" rumors and speculation have circulated for quite some time: CNET compiled a wishlist of desired features. And gaming blog … Read more
