Report: Apple in trademark dispute over iPad name

A company that claims it owns the trademark on the name "IPAD" in China says it will sue Apple for infringing on its ownership in that market, according to the Financial Times.

The report, published today, weaves a complicated international legal tale surrounding Apple's efforts to secure the trademark name on its popular touch-screen tablet. Here's the gist: Taiwanese contract manufacturer Proview makes displays, but formerly sold a tablet PC named I-Pad, a trademark it registered in China and other markets like the EU, South Korea, Singapore, Indonesia, and Mexico between 2000 and 2004.

Rumor: Apple to hold top secret iOS developer summit

Business Insider reports that Apple is holding a top secret summit for iOS developers in order to improve the overall quality of iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch applications.

The "industry source" claims the event begins next week and last three days. The summit would allow developers to have an opportunity for exclusive face time with Apple engineers and perhaps some hands-on help with apps.

With iOS 4.2 set to release sometime in the next month or so, hosting a developer's summit makes sense for Apple. Google's Android OS continues to gain market (and mind) share … Read more

PBS for iPad streams prime-time shows for free

Hey, PBS! How do you expect to make any money if you give away your app?

I'm kidding, of course. I love free stuff, especially when it's awesome free stuff like PBS for iPad. The new app streams full-length episodes of shows like "Antiques Roadshow," "Carrier," "NOVA," and the much-ballyhooed new "Sherlock Holmes."

It also serves up "PBS NewsHour," "Austin City Limits" performances, and previews of nearly everything else in PBS' prime-time lineup. (Alas, previews are all you get of PBS Kids. If you want full-length episodes of, say, "Sesame Street" and "WordGirl," you'll have to pony up for them in the iTunes Store.) … Read more

Eye-Fi makes photo sharing more cloudy

If you've never used an Eye-Fi SD card, it's a pretty great solution for using wireless networks to get photos and video you've just shot out of your camera and stored on your computer and/or uploaded to a favorite sharing site. Getting full access to that content from a computer other than your own, however, wasn't easy until today's launch of Eye-Fi View. The service lets you shoot and store to the company's cloud storage so you can view and share from just about any Web-connected computer and mobile device.

Emulator runs DOS, Windows on an iPad

So this was cool enough that I had to drop what I was doing (cleaning out my desk) to write it up.

Somehow, Apple has approved a DOS emulator for the iPhone and iPad and it's on the App Store for 99 cents. Better yet, someone managed to load Windows 3.0 on the thing.

The app, iDOS, is universal, working well on iPads and iPhones alike. It features such niceties as a retro grimy keyboard, floppy drive, and attached sticky notes, along with a coffee-stained notepad.

But if you want it, you probably better buy it quick. I … Read more

The 404 695: Where basically, we hide your wife (podcast)

Jay, Josh, and Danny from BeenVerified are back in The 404 studio to show off their brand new sex offender locator app for the Android and iPhone! For some reason, it keeps going off during the show...

BeenVerified is an online service that makes it easy to do quick, thorough background checks on people, and it's a lot easier than simply Googling someone's name. The instant search not only gives public access to legal databases for criminal records and phone numbers; it's also an excellent source for monitoring sex offenders in your neighborhood.

Their latest Sex Offender Tracker App uses augmented reality to display graphical overlays on your phone that help you locate registered sex offenders in your area, and can you believe it? They got ANTOINE DODSON to be their spokesperson in the commercial!

Keep listening if you're unaware of Mr. Dodson, but with a successful single that has gotten 35,000 YouTube hits so far and his own Halloween costume, you should really know this guy already.

The Sex Offender Tracker app is available for the iPhone and Android for $1.99, and 5 percent of all proceeds will be donated to the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network (Rainn), an anti-sexual-assault organization.

The guys stick around after the break for the following batch of video voicemails:

DeeJay shows us how an 8-bit beat is made with a simple drum machine!

VLC for iPhone plays nearly any video file

As you probably know, the iPhone and iPod Touch make terrific video players--but they're limited in terms of the video formats they support. If you've got, say, Divx or MKV files you want to watch, you're out of luck unless you run them through a converter first--a time-consuming hassle, to say the least.

Last month, the VLC Media Player app for iPad enabled users to work around this limitation by playing virtually all video formats, no conversion required.

I'm happy to report that VLC just went universal, meaning it's now available for iPhone and iPod TouchRead more

Apple taps Unisys to reach businesses, government

In a bid to capture more corporate and government customers, Apple is seeking help from IT services provider Unisys.

In deal between the two companies, Unisys will offer maintenance and other services to businesses and government agencies that buy Apple devices, Gene Zapfel, a managing partner at Unisys, told Bloomberg. The contract was signed this month, Bloomberg reported yesterday, but so far no details have been revealed.

Though its focus has traditionally been on consumers, schools, and creative professionals, Apple has found itself pulled more into the enterprise arena, especially as employees are bringing their iPhones to work.
