Mention rally driving and two cars leap to mind: the Subaru WRX STI and the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. These two veterans of the track have been duking it out for over a decade, and they both get a major upgrade for the 2008 model year in the form of the Evo X (as in 10) and the 2008 Impreza WRX STI. Both Subaru and Mitsubishi used the second day of the Los Angeles Auto Show to unveil their latest racers, and we could think of no better time to pit their latest offerings against each other. KIA, which showed off new concept cars at the recent Frankfurt and Tokyo auto shows, brought another one out at the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show. The KND-4 shows off KIA's exploration of what a future compact SUV might look like. The front of the car, with its raked windshield, is reminiscent of the Mazda CX-7, and uses LED headlights in true futuristic concept car style. The rear of the car is squared off, maximizing cargo room. The entire vehicle sits up high on 20-inch wheels, but it is less than 15 feet long. It seats four in individual … Read more
Surrounded by a Lamborghini, a Cadillac Escalade, and a Range Rover, the little 1957 BMW Isetta seems out of place in the Al & Ed's Autosound booth at the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show. But the car is as high tech as they come, and gets better gas mileage than most cars at the show. The restored Isetta isn't exactly original--Al & Ed's Autosound is a major aftermarket retailer and installer in Southern California, and the company fitted the little two-seater with all the latest infotainment gear. A Kenwood touch-screen monitor is mounted to the front of … Read more
At a small booth in one of the hallways of the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show, Callaway displayed its new C16 Speedster. The Speedster, which was introduced last summer, completes Callaway's C16 lineup. Previous models are a Cabrio and a Coupe, but neither look as unique as the Speedster. The C16s rely on a Corvette chassis, but in the case of the Speedster, the body is original. Its open cockpit hearkens back to 1950s race cars. For safety, carbon fiber helmets are always available for the driver and passenger, and are stored behind the seats. Under the hood sits … Read more
The automotive press covered the hell out of the Nissan GT-R's exterior and engine specs when the supercar launched in Tokyo last month. What you didn't see was some of the cool interior gadgetry that comes as standard on the redesigned road rocket. We got an exclusive look at some of the GT-R's cabin tech today at the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show, where the car is making its North American debut. Check out our exclusive photo gallery here
At the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show, Green Car Journal's Green Car of the Year award was given to the 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid. The Tahoe Hybrid is the largest car to win the award, with past winners including the Toyota Prius and the Mercury Mariner Hybrid. The newly introduced Tahoe Hybrid uses a dual-mode hybrid system developed by GM, Daimler-Chrysler, and BMW. GM is the first company to bring cars with this system to market. The Tahoe Hybrid uses a 6-liter V-8 gas engine in conjunction with electric motors for propulsion. The motors get electricity from a battery … Read more
To prove that its hydrogen fuel cell drive systems can handle real-world conditions, Toyota took its FCHV, or Fuel Cell Hydrogen Vehicle, down the 2,300 miles of the Alaska Highway. The car they used was on display at the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show. This car uses the same platform and body as a Toyota Highlander, yet its wheels are turned by electric motors. The electricity is generated from a fuel cell stack that runs off of hydrogen. Toyota has fitted this most recent generation of the FCHV with 10,000 psi hydrogen tanks that give it a range … Read more
One of the more ridiculous concepts at the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show is the Suzuki Makai. This car started life as an SX4 Sport edition, but its top was cut off, making it a converted rather than a convertible. A couple of surfboards are mounted on top and might offer some of the protection of a real roof. Surfboards and car are painted a shade of orange suitable for road construction equipment.
The interior features what are probably the most uncomfortable car seats ever devised. They consist of leather belts stretched across a tubular frame, making it a step … Read more
Jaguar is a brand with quite a bit of history, and as such has retained some of its basic body styles for decades. But no more. The company is undergoing a major change as it redesigns its cars for the new millennium. The XK got a makeover that had some comparing it with Aston Martins. That was the coupe, and now comes the sedan. Jaguar's new XF is a beautiful and thoroughly modern car, with a design suggesting Bentley and Maserati. Even better, it will sell for substantially less than those cars, while having interior components never seen outside … Read more
General Motors is unveiling new models that use both of its hybrid-car technologies at this year's Los Angeles Auto Show. The all-new Chevy Malibu gets the hybrid-lite treatment with the same Belt Alternator Starter system that we've seen in both the Saturn Vue and Saturn Aura Green Lines. GM saves its more sophisticated 2-Mode hybrid technology for its thirstiest full sized trucks as both the Silverado pick-up and the Cadillac Escalade (yes, that's right, the Escalade) make their hybrid debuts this week.
