Dell cozies up to its Twitter followers

That Dell is offering a 30 percent discount on refurbished XPS M1210 notebooks on Tuesday isn't particularly novel. How Dell is communicating the offer is, however.

The deal is available on the Dell Outlet Web site Tuesday only (it expires at 11:59 p.m. Central) to those who click through to the page from Dell Outlet's Twitter feed. (There doesn't appear to be a requirement to actually follow @DellOutlet on Twitter.)

The Twitter discount will continue with different hardware on a weekly basis, according to Dell. It's part of the company's extensive social-media outreach, … Read more

Erykah Badu twitters while giving birth

I wrote that headline several minutes ago and still a faintly uncomfortable feeling wafts through my main functional channels.

Erykah Badu, one of the world's finest and most moving singers, is so in love with Twitter that, even in the latter stages of a home birth just a couple of days ago, she tweeted while she squeezed.

She began the morning on her blog, touchingly entitled 'fatbellybella' with the lovely greeting: "Morning, I'm in labor.' But when her fingers became otherwise engaged, she let her man, the rapper Jay Electronica, take over.

Alright, it was fairly innocuous … Read more

Twittering the Super Bowl ads

If you're the kind of person who likes to watch football games with a laptop sitting beside the chicken wings and popcorn, then you may want to add Twitter to the party mix for today's Super Bowl.

But will you be watching the game, or the commercials? For some of the Twitter crowd -- as is true for many others watching the game between the Arizona Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Steelers -- the big deal will be the ads.

Hence, the 2009 Twitter Bowl, the second annual microblogged "conversation about Super Bowl ads," where participants will … Read more

The tech that makes the Super Bowl super

Correction: This post initially misstated the company providing the tracking technology being used to provide security and safety for NFL personnel. The company is US Fleet Tracking.

At its core, football represents the polar opposite of technology: A bunch of large men run around a field, battling for position and the control of a small pigskin ball.

Of course, the production of an actual NFL game requires lots of technology--from the headsets coaches use to communicate, to the computers used to calculate statistics to the HD cameras that record the contest for the viewing audience.

When it comes to the … Read more

When is a gun not a gun? On TV and twittered

Spoiler alert: If you really hate reading anything about episodes of Lost that you haven't seen yet--and you haven't seen the episode that first aired Wednesday--you might not want to read ahead.

I know we have more pressing things to talk about these days--the economy, climate change, the new president--but I'm going to barge in this morning with a warning about something a bit more niche.

When you're posting to Twitter about something you're watching on TV, make sure nobody thinks it's really happening!

Background: I've been watching this season of Lost at … Read more

Unborn baby uses Twitter

How many times can you say "ga ga goo goo" in 140 or fewer characters? I don't have the time to work it out.

But I can tell you that the child who was, until recently, in Ellen Menscher's womb may well have been the world's youngest Twitter user.

Baby Tyler, who was born last week, was hooked up to something called a "Kickbee," a device invented by his dad, Corey, who is an interactive telecommunications student at New York University.

Basically, when the unborn Tyler kicked with sufficient force, it would wirelessly send a signal, via a belt worn by his mama, to his Twitter account. … Read more

Report: VC infusion values Twitter at $250 million

TechCrunch is reporting Saturday night that Twitter may have signed a term sheet with one or more venture capital firms that would value the microblogging company at $250 million.

Although it did not provide specifics, the report cited "a source with knowledge of the deal."

Last fall, Facebook was said to have made an offer to buy Twitter worth as much as $500 million.

"Rumor is Twitter hit up more than a few venture firms to pitch the $250 million valuation, and got more than one 'no,'" TechCrunch wrote Saturday. "But someone's bit, perhaps … Read more

Eight oddball Twitter utilities

Twitter is a great personal and social communications platform. But that's not all you can use it for.

I've dug through countless services to find some interesting, loopy, and just plain cool tools that allow you to do more than talk to friends. From receiving tweets when your clothes are clean to tracking packages, Twitter is a great place to solve many of the day's tasks.

PIMPY3WASH OK, so maybe you can't use this and it's only designed for one person, but PIMPY3WASH is the neatest washing machine hack I've seen, so I had … Read more
