The Properties menu reveals plenty of information about all kinds of files, including file size and type and the date and time that the file was created, modified, and accessed. Occasionally this information contains errors; we've had files that we've moved from one machine to another that have somehow ended up with their creation dates years off. Other times, this information needs to be edited for slightly questionable purposes. Perhaps you have to turn in a report electronically and you'd prefer that your boss or instructor not know that you started it the day before it was … Read more
Though music and entertainment were the of focus of Wednesday's Apple press conference in San Francisco, CEO Steve Jobs devoted a few minutes to the next release of the company's mobile operating system. iOS 4.1 will be available next week for the iPhone and iPod Touch. And in a change from previous OS updates, it will be free for iPod Touch users.
Here's a summary of the new features that Jobs announced. We'll add to this list as we learn of other additions and we'll follow up with a hands-on review after next week'… Read more
While currently limited to phones on the Verizon network, Microsoft's Bing for Android is a worthy search app. Similar to Bing on other mobile platforms, the app overlays a striking photograph of the day with a pop-up menu to search by images, movies, maps, news, or what's nearby. There's also an option to search for directions--walking and driving. In addition, a search field sits at the top, next to a voice search button. Bing for Android tucks your history, settings, and favorites in the phone's hard-coded Menu button.
Bing also integrates maps, and the touchable hot … Read more
Digital imaging and graphic design software is often the victim of one of two problems: either it's too advanced for everyone but expert users, or it's too basic to do anything very useful. FotoMorph is one of the rare programs that manage to deliver impressive results with very little know-how. This fun application lets users create animations that morph one photo into another, no experience required.
The program's interface is attractive and intuitive. It does contain some advertising, but it's fairly unobtrusive. We appreciated the fact that the program comes with a sample project, allowing users … Read more
Iomega announced Tuesday that its plans to equip all of its eGo portable hard drives in 500GB and 1TB capacities with the new USB 3.0 interface by early October. Iomega is a little late to the USB 3.0 game as Western Digital, Seagate, and many other storage vendors released their USB 3.0-based external hard drive a long time ago.
According to Iomega, to make up for this, the new USB 3.0 portable drive will share the same software bundle that comes with its existing USB 2.0 drives. And most importantly, according to the company, its … Read more
Unlike with text documents, combining multiple PDF files is more than a matter of just copying and pasting. Fortunately, you don't have to drop a big chunk of change on Adobe Acrobat to be able to merge or split PDF files. Arduo PDF Merger is a simple program that can handle basic splitting and merging tasks. It's not the most sophisticated program we've ever seen, but it works fine for what it is.
The program's interface is plain and intuitive, with commonsense buttons for adding and removing files. To merge PDF files, users simply select the … Read more
We've seen a lot of image-editing software in our day, ranging from one-trick ponies to programs we couldn't even begin to figure out how to use. Image Cropper is one of the former, with a feature list that is exactly two items long. Still, if you're looking for a no-frills way to crop and rotate images--and do absolutely nothing else--it works just fine.
Image Cropper's interface is plain and intuitive, and we were amused to see that it comes with various skins that give it the look of different versions of Microsoft Office. This seemed like … Read more
Duplicate files can waste a lot of valuable space on your hard drive, so it's a great idea to check for them periodically. DupScout is a simple program that lets users quickly scan their hard drives and identify duplicate files, potentially freeing up many megabytes of wasted space.
The program's interface is attractive and easy to navigate. There are three different layouts to choose from, and although they're fairly similar, we appreciate that there are options to choose from. Using the program is quite simple; users simply select the directory that they want to scan, click a … Read more
