So far, most of the reviews of Canon's high-end EOS-1D Mark III digital SLR have been highly favorable, as befits a $4,500 camera from the leader of the pack. But this week, Rob Galbraith, one of the privileged few to get an early look at the camera, issued a scathing review of its autofocus abilities.

Hewlett-Packard, it seems, is determined to help everyone make photos fixes right in their cameras so there's no trace of the imperfect world transferred to the computer.

On Thursday, the company announced the release of nine cameras (click here to see a full photo gallery) that at first glance are pretty run-of-the-mill. But many of them incorporate the in-camera editing features that were introduced in more expensive models.

While I was perusing the Flickr camera finder during the last couple days, I was perplexed to note that a number of previously popular models had taken a hit.

The site tracks which cameras are most widely used to upload photos in the last 30 days, but the leading contenders nearly universally got whacked. For example, take a look at the digital SLRs that are leaders with Flickrs' high-upload enthusiasts--the Canon Rebel XT, Pentax K100D, Olympus E-Volt E-500, Nikon D50. Whenever people complain to manufacturers about skimping on screen size, the stock answer is usually, "Well, we wanted to make the camera small and light, but we needed to leave room for the buttons."

Apple's update to its operating system Wednesday didn't just fix a security hole. Mac OS X 10.4.10 now also supports raw images from the latest digital cameras, including the Canon's vaunted EOS-1D Mark III.

The update also endows Macs with the ability to decode raw images from the Panasonic DMC-LX1 and LX2; the Leica M8, D-LUX 2 and D-LUX 3; the Fujifilm S5 Pro; and the Nikon D40x.

Apparently all those advertisements saying you'll get better pictures of your kids with a digital SLR camera are paying off.

The primary digital SLR (single-lens reflex) user in the United States is a woman 51 percent of the time among those surveyed, according to new study results released Monday by the Photo Marketing Association. Among those households where women are the primary user, the average annual income is at least $75,000, and they're much more likely than most to have children under 6 years old.
