Whatever anyone can do, Amazon can do, too. Groupon is filing for an IPO and creating new jobs for salespeople in just about every city on earth; Google Offers debuted this week; and I hear there might even be a few other daily deal services out there. So naturally, Amazon wants in on the action. The company that offers... well, everything, is now offering offers as well through AmazonLocal.
The service seems to follow the same model as those of rivals like Groupon, where subscribers to a daily e-mail can purchase a voucher that offers savings on local goods and … Read more
LED lighting control developer Redwood Systems announced Thursday that Japanese conglomerate Mitsui Group has invested $3.5 million.
Redwood Systems already had venture capital firms U.S. Venture Partners and Battery Ventures as investors.
However, an endorsement from a global company like Mitsui puts an especially big spotlight on the company, and on computerized lighting-control systems in general.
Redwood Systems makes computerized DC (direct current) lighting control systems aimed at improving energy efficiency.
Using sensors or motion detection cameras, the system is capable of gathering data on things like temperature and room occupancy. That data can then be used to … Read more
PORTLAND, Ore.--Google Offers launched its answer to Groupon today exclusively in Portland, Ore., with its first deal for--you guessed it--a coffee shop. Perhaps owing to the highly caffeinated culture here, some people who snapped up the "Offer of the Day" raced over to Floyd's Coffee Shop only to discover that the coupon can't be redeemed until tomorrow.
"Within 10 minutes of the deal going live, someone was in the shop to redeem the offer," Jack Inglis, co-owner of Floyd's, said in a phone interview.
On the cash register at Floyd's in … Read more
PALOS VERDES, Calif.--Groupon CEO Andrew Mason kicked off his interview with Kara Swisher here at D9 with this bombshell about his company's upcoming IPO: "The news is that we have nothing to announce."
Mason's gambit to dodge the question didn't work. "Why do you want to become a public company?" Swisher asked.
"I run a business..." Mason dogmatically droned, "and shareholders want money."
The 8,000-person company (up from about 1,500 a year ago) is about one-half local salespeople. Groupon, as industry watchers well know, doesn't &… Read more
Google Offers--the Web giant's Groupon challenger--will launch tomorrow in Portland, Ore., Google Chairman Eric Schmidt announced this evening.
Schmidt and Stephanie Tilenius, Google's VP of commerce, demonstrated the new daily deals service at the D9 conference in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., showing a $3 coupon that yields $10 in Floyd's coffee. The service is expected to rollout later this year in other cities, including New York and San Francisco.
Like Groupon's service, Google Offers users can receive discounts of 50 percent or more at local businesses, but the deals won't need to hit a user … Read more
