Back up Firefox

Moving to a new computer is a pain. You can sync bookmarks and export some data, but it's almost like starting over again. Thankfully, Download.com editor Jessica Dolcourt tipped me off to the Weave plug-in. Weave syncs your bookmarks, search queries, passwords, and even open tabs and then encrypts the data on Mozilla's servers. This can save a lot of time when you're setting up a new computer or if you browse the Web on more than one computer.

If you're not comfortable with beta version software, you may want to wait on this, because … Read more

Online backup

In this day and age of Trojan horses, viruses and other Web-based nasties, backing up your computer is more important than ever. With Magic Backup, you won't pay for the program you download to manage backups, but you will need to renew the subscription for the online storage service every year.

Still, it's incredibly easy to back up your important files using Magic Backup. The program's simple-to-navigate screen will appeal to users who have never backed up a file in their life, as well as those who have been backing up for years. Five simple tabs display … Read more

File goes MIA

SOS Online Backup is aimed at people interested in their computer's security. Users can save important files to an Internet server so that if anything is lost or stolen, these files can be retrieved. While some users reported issues during the installation process, the program worked well overall.

This program gives users an opportunity to take their most precious information--music, pictures, and so on--and store them remotely. The big draw to this program is its capability to restore these files anywhere on any computer. By quickly setting up a profile with a username and password, any computer with the … Read more

DFIncBackup Professional offers users a way to back up their files to prevent losing them forever. While this function appeals to practically all users, the program may not accommodate everyone.

This 30-day free trial is designed to take specific files and folders and back them up onto a ZIP file or an external disk. The first screen can seem intimidating to novice users or those unfamiliar with other backup programs on the market. DFIncBackup Professional has a Project Wizard that walks you through the steps of taking your files and saving them, but it still requires a solid grasp of … Read more

Carbonite sues hardware maker, reseller

Customers who lost data after it had failed to be backed up properly by service provider Carbonite in 2007 may have few legal remedies, a lawyer said on Monday. Meanwhile, Carbonite is suing the hardware manufacturer and reseller for charges including breach of warranty, breach of contract, fraud, and unfair and deceptive practices.

Carbonite filed a lawsuit last week against hardware maker Promise Technology and reseller Interactive Digital Systems, alleging it was sold $3 million worth of defective equipment, which affected backups of 7,500 customers.

In its lawsuit, filed in Massachusetts' Suffolk County Superior Court, Carbonite claims it lost … Read more

HP shutters Upline backup

Hewlett-Packard is killing the online backup service Upline. It's a pity, not because Upline was a great service itself--it had reliability issues--but because Upline was built primarily with technology from Titanize, a company HP acquired. Titanize was a great unknown online storage app, offering not just backup, but Web-based access to files, and computer-to-computer file synchronization. Now both Upline and Titanize are gone.

The online storage space is crowded, so one can't really fault HP for withdrawing from a competitive market where it didn't stand out. For online backup, I recommend Carbonite or Mozy (colleague Tom Merritt … Read more

BackupURL saves any site for viewing later

With social bookmarking and archiving site Magnolia down until a re-launch later this year, some users might be looking for an alternate way to capture snapshots of Web sites as they appeared at specific times. Besides Iterasi, which we've covered previously, there's a new service called BackupURL that can save what a page looked like, and make it available for reading later--even when the site is temporarily down, or long gone.

To do it for any page, you simply drop in its URL, and BackupURL will capture links, images, and any page formatting. What's nice is that … Read more
