Nokia's Lumia 900 smartphone will hit AT&T's store shelves on April 8, a move Nokia hopes will usher a return to the U.S. in a big way.

The phone will sell for $99.99 with a two-year contract, AT&T told CNET. It is one of the most affordable flagship products AT&T has ever sold.

There's a lot at stake with this launch. Nokia badly needs a buzz-worthy hit product in the U.S., a market it has struggled to operate in over the last few years despite dominating early in … Read more

Nokia quietly establishes U.S. beachhead at T-Mobile

Nokia's Lumia 710, often lost in the shadow of its higher-profile brothers, has actually gained a modest foothold at T-Mobile USA.

While not a blockbuster, the Lumia 710 has gotten decent traction at T-Mobile's online store. Web sites such as Amazon and Wirefly similarly have the device ranked high among T-Mobile customers.

Its performance marks a promising start to Nokia's attempt to reenter the U.S. market. And unlike conventional strategy, the Lumia 710 didn't achieve its success through the best specifications or the latest network connection. Instead, its attractive price tag and bang-for-the-buck value have … Read more

Owners of Nokia's Lumia 610 can use their phone as a hot spot to provide Wi-Fi coverage for up to five different devices.

But sit tight, Lumia owners. A Nokia spokesman confirmed to CNET that the company will add hot-spot functionality to the 710 and 800 in a future software update.

Nokia's Web site doesn't yet provide details on the Lumia 900, … Read more

Jumbo smartphones: Is bigger really better?

In this edition of Ask Maggie, I offer some advice for buying a new smartphone that doesn't require a crane to hoist it up to your ear. And I explain why Nokia's new 41-megapixel technology is on such a lame OS.

Dear Maggie, I've been using the iPhone since it first came out and have not looked back until recently. Now I'm considering switching. But I've run into a huge problem, every new phone is too big for my personal taste.

I would like the latest greatest flagship device, but it seems that every manufacturer … Read more

Microsoft goes after the 99 percenters with Windows Phone

BARCELONA, Spain--Microsoft wants to be known as the people's smartphone company.

The software giant said today that it had lowered the minimum requirements to build a Windows Phone, a move that allows vendors to construct less-expensive devices that can appeal to more budget-conscious customers and first-time smartphone buyers.

The shift represents an attempt to expand Microsoft's addressable market, vital to the company's bid to regain a measure of relevancy in the smartphone business. The company had previously maintained a strict list of specifications that vendors had to follow, which at the time made the devices fairly high-end. … Read more

More Nokia Lumia 610 details leak

BARCELONA, Spain--In the run up to Mobile World Congress, Nokia has barely hinted as to what it would bring to the show. A Windows Phone device is an obvious guess, of course, but that leaves us to wonder just how many handsets the company will unveil and whether it will stop at Microsoft's OS.

On Thursday, we learned a bit more when Reuters reported that Nokia would use Barcelona to show a budget-friendly Windows Phone 7 handset called the Lumia 610 and a global version of the Lumia 900, which Nokia announced last month at CES. Reuters didn't … Read more
