Honda announced its participation in the Hot Wheels 40th anniversary design contest by unveiling the Honda Racer, a 1/64th scale model designed at the automaker's R&D facility in Torrance, Calif.. Other entrants include Chevrolet, with the 1957 Corvette-inspired Chevroletor; Ford, with the Gangster Grin; Dodge, with the XP-07; and Mitsubishi, with Double Shotz. The design competition centered on the Hot Wheels motto of power, speed, and performance. The toy company obviously ceded the virtue of economy to Matchbox, which has models of the Mazda2 and Smart Cabrio.

We read the accolades accorded to the gas-only version, the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu, after its launch late last year, which reminded us of the good press received by the Saturn Aura the year before. When he bought a 5-year-old pickup truck with 41,000 miles on it, Frank Oresnik had no idea how long it would last him. That was in 1996. On a Friday evening in February 2008, he was still on the road with that 1991 Chevrolet Silverado, speaking on the phone with National Public Radio's Robert Siegel and watching the odometer roll over the 1 million mile mark. And, he told Siegel, he has the oil change and other maintenance records to prove it's legit.

Chevrolet launched a new crossover vehicle at the 2008 Chicago Auto Show, but from its specifications, it sounds more like an SUV. The Traverse has three rows of seating, plus cargo space, although the automaker insists that it drives like a much smaller car. We like that it uses a six-speed automatic. It also has some interesting tech options, such as Bluetooth, that shows GM isn't as bound to OnStar as it has been in the past.

At the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show, Green Car Journal's Green Car of the Year award was given to the 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid. The Tahoe Hybrid is the largest car to win the award, with past winners including the Toyota Prius and the Mercury Mariner Hybrid. The newly introduced Tahoe Hybrid uses a dual-mode hybrid system developed by GM, Daimler-Chrysler, and BMW. GM is the first company to bring cars with this system to market. While it still won't get you the 45 mpg of a Toyota Prius, the new version of the Chevrolet Silverado hybrid may make you feel less guilty about driving a large pickup.

General Motors unveiled the 2009 Chevy Silverado hybrid at the 2007 LA Auto Show on Wednesday.

The full-size pickup looks identical to the regular Silverado, but features guts that lessen its carbon footprint.

We're envious. The editors over at AutoblogGreen got to take a 300-mile trip in the Chevrolet Sequel hydrogen fuel cell car. We don't just envy the driving experience, which in a fuel cell car involves completely smooth and quiet acceleration.
