'LANdroid' keeps troops plugged in

Robots might not be fighting wars by themselves yet, but they're doing their part among the support ranks in the battlefied. As equipment such as pocket-sized spy bots become increasingly common, other types of mobile equipment aren't far behind.

DARPA's "LANdroid" prototype, for instance, is a wireless network router mounted on treads that looks like a tiny tank. Like the ultra-portable spy bots, the palm-sized device is designed to be dropped by Army troops in the field, then autonomously find the best spot to station itself as a network hub, according to OhGizmo.

Pyro stoner DJ starter kit?

I've just finished reviewing this Hercules Mobile DJ product, and I must say that for $99, it's actually pretty fun. Still, the package design is hilariously bad. It's like someone dropped some bad acid right before opening up Photoshop.

The Hercules Mobile DJ MP3 is nowhere near a professional-quality digital DJ solution, but at this price, it's not meant to be. It's meant for the stoned pyromaniac teenagers pictured on the box. The package comes with a wireless iPod-white DJ interface, a USB wireless receiver that connects to your computer, and MP3 DJ software … Read more

Moto's W385 on its way to Verizon

About this time of year, the new phones we saw at CTIA start to line up for their respective carriers. Last week, we told you that AT&T/Cingular was picking up the Samsung SGH-A717 and SGH-A727, and now Mobiledia is putting the Motorola W385 on deck for Verizon Wireless. Sporting a thin design that looks like a mashup of Moto's Razr and Krzr phones, the W385 has a low-end feature set that includes a VGA camera, a speakerphone, text and multimedia messaging, and Bluetooth. It should arrive at Verizon within the next couple of months.

Photos: Verizon Wireless G'zOne Type-S

How many times have you dropped your phone in the bathroom? Even if you haven't, you probably know someone who has. I have a friend who has dropped her phone in the bathroom at least five times, and each time she's had to find a replacement. If you're a klutz, you'll love the Verizon Wireless G'zOne Type-S. Not only is it water-resistant, it's military-tested to be shock- and dust-resistant as well. In short, this thing is as tough as nails. It's a little smaller and appears more streamlined than its big brother, the … Read more

Verizon Wireless launches the rugged G'zOne Type-S

Verizon Wireless has just announced that it will be the exclusive provider of the Casio G'zOne Type-S rugged cell phone, starting tomorrow. A successor to the Type-V handset it debuted a year ago, the Type-S is much smaller and has a more streamlined designed, but it was still made with the same military-grade specifications. According to Verizon and Casio, it is able to withstand extreme humidity, three feet of water for up to 30 minutes, and drops from about five feet; it can also resist dust as fine as silica flour. It certainly looks rugged, too, with its sturdy … Read more

Verizon Wireless G'zOne Type-S spotted on FCC

PhoneScoop spotted the Casio G'zOne Type-S phone on the FCC site yesterday, and it looks to be the smaller version of the G'zOne Type-V phone we reviewed last year. The Type-S seems to be just as durable and rugged as its predecessor, although the specs on it are slightly different: it sports a VGA camera instead of the 2-megapixel one on the Type-V, and features Bluetooth, which the Type-V didn't. The Type-S also did away with the stubby antenna on the Type-V, opting instead for a loop antenna similar to those found on a lot of Sony … Read more

Wireless mouse never needs batteries

What if someone claimed to have invented a wireless mouse that never needed batteries or a recharger? Yeah, we'd say they were nuts too. But Gizoo is offering one that does just that and even makes the claim in its name: the Battery-Free Wireless Mouse.

How? It draws its energy from the electricity in a companion pad that, unlike the mouse itself, does need a power cord that connects to the computer's USB port, according to Coolest-Gadgets. It may not sound all that useful at first--after all, you're still tethered by the pad's cord--but we've … Read more
