System diagnostics toolbox

SiSoftware Sandra provides a robust package of diagnostic tools for testing your system and teasing out its problems--or potential headaches.

This download launches a cheerfully designed interface with an array of colorful--one might even say sprightly--icons for each of its tools. Its arrangement of tools was nicely categorized for the user's benefit: Computer Maintenance, Module Types (Benchmarks, Hardware, Software, Support), and Program Maintenance. Across the top of the window are tabs for each category that match the icons, and each tab provides access to a set of focused tools. We were very pleased with SiSoftware Sandra's performance during … Read more

Questionable psychic test

MB Psychic Color Test allows users to test and develop their psychic abilities by trying to predict which color the program has selected from a group of colored rectangles. If ones assumes that psychic abilities do exist, we suppose that this program could be a useful tool, although it's hard to gauge whether the program actually works the way the publisher says it does.

The interface is simple, though cluttered with ads for the publisher, Mystic Board. Users select from beginner, intermediate, or expert levels, with the number of color choices increasing with the difficulty. The program displays a … Read more

Child's spelling tool

Ray's Spelling and Word Games provides a simple program that will help youngsters learn how to spell. With three different games and simple commands that will be quickly mastered, users will love this collection of games.

The program's interface is full of cartoonish images, bright colors, and large, simple words that children should be able to master. If not, their parents will easily be able to assist, making the Help file somewhat unnecessary. The program consists of Spelling Challenges, Word Jumbles, and a hangman-like Find the Word. The spelling challenge provides tutorials that prepare the user for hearing … Read more

Third Party Application: Evernote

One of my favorite desktop applications is Evernote. It's a handy tool for clipping websites or partial web pages, making lists, keeping notes, and storing images which Evernote makes searchable. Evernote for Palm Pre was one of the first applications I downloaded from the App Catalog.

My experience so far has been disappointing. This isn't even version 1.0, however; it is version is 0.1.10, so I'll give them some slack for the lack of features. The main head-scratcher is the lack of zoom. Half of my notes in Evernote are images, either scans or … Read more

Accessories: The Touchstone Charger

When I bought the Pre and openned a new account with Sprint, they offered me a 10% discount if bought two accessories. I wanted the Touchstone anyway, so I threw in some screen protectors and the discount covered those.

Palm has introduced some pretty slick new tech with the Touchstone charger. The kit comes with the Touchstone and another back plate.… Read more

Why this version of the Pre won't replace my iPod

I would really like to carry one device. Ideally this would be the Palm Pre: phone, email, sms, internet, calendar, contacts, and media player. I listen to a lot of podcasts and music on my 30GB iPod classic right now, and it would be great to not carry it around anymore since I have the Pre. … Read more

Third Party Apps: Tweed

Let me just get this out of the way: The Palm App Catalog sucks. Give it time and there will be plenty to choose from, but right now there are only a few gems in there. I was at first eager and hopeful when I saw Classic, by MotionApps, which is an emulator and allows you to install any of the applications that were designed for Palm OS on webOS. It would make thousands of applications availble to Pre owners, but two things are keeping me from purchasing right now: the $30 price tag and the plethora of poor reviews. … Read more

Burn, Baby, Burn! GPS Inferno

I've used the Sprint Navigation feature 3 times now. I've never had a GPS device before. The first time was from San Francisco to Menlo Park. It went smoothly; I missed my last turn and the GPS recalculated quickly, and it handled navigation in the business park's small parking lot. The second time was for a trip from San Francisco to South San Francisco to the FedEx distribution center. This was a shorter trip and the parking lot was much bigger than on the first trip, but it got me there in one piece. … Read more

The Calendar

I like the calendar that comes with the Pre. For a few days I was a little irritated that only the time was shown on the home screen (unless the screen was locked, then you saw both the date and the time), but then I realized that the calendar icon in the quick launch bar contains the day. (Insert Homer Simpson "DOH!" here.) … Read more
