Review: DLO HomeDock HD, last of a dying breed?

You don't see many iPod video docks these days--and for good reason. Starting in 2007, Apple locked down video accessory support for the iPod, while simultaneously releasing a product that made such accessories arguably obsolete: the Apple TV.

Even in their heyday, iPod video accessories have always been a tough sell due to the inherent limitations of iPod video resolution. The boom in high-definition TV sales over the past few years hasn't helped the cause either. Upscaled or not, who wants to watch the iPod's default 320x240 video resolution on their 40-inch plasma TV?

Dock your iPod for $59.99 shipped

The Altec Lansing inMotion iM600 iPod speaker dock has a list price of $149.95, but until Saturday, you can score one from RadioShack for $59.99 shipped.

That's pretty sweet for a dock with an FM radio, rechargeable battery, and four-star rating from CNET.

One thing straight away: The iM600 is compatible with most iPod models (including the Touch), but not the iPhone. It doesn't charge newer Nanos, either. It does, however, feature a remote, an alarm clock (if your iPod already has one, that is), a stereo input jack for connecting other devices (ah, there's … Read more

Review: Griffin Simplifi makes mediocrity easier

It's hard to make an iPod dock sizzle, but Griffin's Simplifi barely approaches room temperature.

By consolidating a memory card reader, USB hub, and iPod dock, the Griffin Simplifi has good intentions. Unfortunately, its card reader only accepts three formats, you only get two USB ports, and the dock doesn't offer a stitch of audio or video connectivity. The Simplifi is pretty looking, granted, but $70 can buy you a lot of pretty things.

Part of me was also hoping that the Simplifi would allow some sort of direct transfer between my memory cards and my iPod (… Read more

More file saving functionality

For all the wonderful things that OS X does, flipping through folders while opening and saving documents remains a hassle. This award-winning app attaches a toolbar to the side of all your Open and Save dialogs, providing quick access to multiple folders and commands. You can jump to favorite and recently used folders, or even manage files and folders right from the dialog (so you don't need to go to the Finder for simple tasks such as renaming and deleting). Default Folder also lets you assign hot keys and work with recent items right from the Dock. We're … Read more

Logitech Pure-Fi iPod speakers: What's the best option?

Logitech's line of Pure-Fi iPod speaker docks has swelled to six, and CNET's reviewed pretty much every one. Some of the models have very similar features and price points, so it seemed like a perfect candidate for a cheat sheet:

*The Pure-Fi Anywhere 2 is not yet reviewed, but it's pretty much identical to the original Pure-Fi Anywhere, but with the addition of iPhone shielding. **The Pure-Fi Express isn't yet reviewed, but it's effectively a renamed version of the older AudioStation Express.

Basically, go with the Elite if you want the best sound quality--we still … Read more

JBL On Time 400iHD: HD radio and iPod speaker dock in one

iPod speakers are a dime a dozen. There are big ones and small ones; black ones and red ones; some with alarm clocks, and many with built-in docks. As one might expect, you don't have to look hard to find models with integrated FM--and even AM--radios, but if you must have cutting-edge tech, HD radio with iTunes Tagging is where it's at. Among the handful of models offering this feature is the JBL On Time 400iHD, a tabletop speaker dock with JBL's signature space-age design. At $300, the On Time is anything but cheap, but the plethora … Read more

Review: Altec Lansing inMotion Max strikes a nice balance

Speaker systems for the iPod are a dime a dozen, but a few of them stand out from the rest. Altec Lansing has built a solid reputation for building affordable iPod speaker systems with above-average sound quality, and its latest inMotion Max portable speaker system is no exception.

The Max is compatible with both the iPod and iPhone, and comes stocked with an FM radio, charging dock, aux input, and an internal rechargeable battery good for about 3.5 hours of iPod playback. We're not bowled over with the Max's unique industrial design and touch-sensitive controls, but at $… Read more

Apple granted patent on Mac OS X Dock

It took quite awhile, but Apple has finally received a patent on one of the most recognizable features of Mac OS X.

The Dock--the panel that holds launchers for Mac OS X applications--has been deemed patent-worthy by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Apple first applied for the patent in late 1999, and AppleInsider notes the concept itself dates back to Apple CEO Steve Jobs' work at NeXT Computing.

Since there's really not much else to note about this announcement, let's do a quick survey: right Dock? Left Dock? Center Dock? I'm a center Dock … Read more

Artsy iPod dock makes you look and sound rich

If Apple's "I am rich" app limits your ways to show off, no worries. Here's another product that can help you do that with style, and is substantially more eye-catching, better sounding, and, most importantly, more expensive.

It's called the Art.Suono Wireless Music Transmission System and iPod Dock and it costs $1,500. Designed by David Wiener Ventures, which makes products under the DWV and Ferrari brands, the Art.Suono is a limited-edition, luxury iPod-compatible product that works as both an audio instrument and, depending on your tastes, a piece of art.

The product … Read more
