Kaleidoscope 2.1.1 is out! It "improves window drawing speed and fixes truncated menus under Mac OS 8.5. It also fixes problems with the Appearance and Internet control panels, Sherlock, MiniCad, Eudora Pro 4.1, POV-Ray, Macromedia Flash, DragStrip, MacSoup, ColorSwitch Pro, QuarkConnect, AlarmsClock, and others. The included schemes have been updated, with better Finder icons in BeBox, improved windows in System 7 andvarious minor tweaks." It also adds several international versions.

CD-ROM SpeedTools 3.9.2 includes a compatibility fix for Mac OS 8.5. DOCMaker 4.8.4 adds Mac OS 8.5 compatibility. Sonnet Crescendo 1.2.6b1 is out (I guess 1.2.5 did not solve all the 8.5 problems). Hard Disk SpeedTools 1.5.2 is now available. From a press release: "The utility for SCSI management can configure disks and automatically build a custom-tuned device driver for your specific Mac model; the new version is compatible with Mac OS 8.5. Additionally, a huge amount of testing and a few changes in this version appear to provide support for Norton Utilities 4.0."

Virex 5.9 is not available. It was supposedly briefly online over the week-end (accessible if you had a password). But several readers (including Rich Bukva and John Martin) now report that it has been withdrawn. They were told by NAI that this was due to "legal reasons" involving the name Virex.

Empty Trash Kevin Adey has created an AppleScript application called Empty Trash. It empties the Trash when you double-click it. Place it by your Trash Can to empty the Trash without having to go to the Special Menu. Update: Jim Jacobson notes: "Apple also provides an AppleScript called "Empty the Trash. It's found in the Speakable Items folder (part of English Speech Recognition)."
