The real top 10 sports twitterers

Fine twittering is like fine wine. Deep, fluid, and just a little dark.

Which is why when one comes to consider which sporting figures have taken their tweets to an exalted level, one doesn't look at the number of followers they might enjoy.

No, one examines their tweets. One swills them around one's mouth. And one spits them out to see just what effect they might have on others.

This list was compiled with some joy and not a little pain, from research that goes beyond that which most scientists could endure.

But please let me start with … Read more

The 404 344: Where we burn our memory bras in protest

Man, we're never going to have a complete show again. With Wilson in Boston visiting his newborn son, we invite Natali Del Conte back on the show, where we disgust and delight her with stories about gravity-defying bras, sleeping with rodents, and a $4k pair of Xbox/Nike sneakers.

After begging Natali to take me back, we move onto a story about a pair of Nike sneakers that fetched $4k on eBay this weekend. They're custom made and feature fiber optic wiring that makes the shoes light up and glow on the wearer. You can guess how wide Jeff opened up the hating floodgates on these guys.

We've also got a really disgusting story about a new strain of SUPER RAT found in Europe that's resistant to pesticides and modern poison. I've got my own story to tell about my ongoing battle with mice in my home, and I won't give away any secrets, but be sure to listen to the last 15 minutes of the show to hear the rest...R.O.U.S. is a staggering understatement. Enjoy your lunch everyone!

Does Twitter worsen our soundbite culture?

Last week the Web was a'Twitter with news that a court had overturned Proposition 8, California's ban on gay marriage.

There was just one problem with the 'news': it's not true.

As The Los Angeles Times reports, someone pulled an archived story from latimes.com, neglected to check the time stamp, and started a raging wall of tweets and retweets.

Some people have a problem with Twitter's 140-character message limit. I think there's a bigger problem: most people don't seem to actually read all 140 characters, much less click on referenced links, preferring instead … Read more

The cat with more than 500,000 Twitter followers

Rudy the Parrot hates him.

Last week, Rudy tweeted: "They can try but they will never get to me. Birds live twice as long as cats, sometimes longer. @Sockington will perish."

I am sure that is true. However, whereas in January Sockington had 10,000 Twitter followers, now there are more than 500,000. Rudy is stuck on 1,573.

Sockington is, as you have probably guessed, a cat. One extremely popular cat.

He is the cat that belongs to Jason Scott, a man with remarkable sideburns who is the brains behind, amongst other things, Textfiles.com. Sockington'… Read more

When Twitter met food trucks

NEW YORK--Goat cheese is the new black. Introducing goat cheese cheesecake, asserted the Twitter account for a Manhattan food outlet called the Dessert Truck one morning in April, a few hours before it opened up shop at its semi-regular haunt on the corner of St. Mark's Place and Third Avenue.

The Dessert Truck is usually in good company. Walk out of the Astor Place subway station into Cooper Square, the gateway to the St. Mark's and Bowery nightlife strips, and depending on the time of day you can buy a cup of coffee, an order of Thai chicken, … Read more

NBA's Dwight Howard wins--thanks God and Twitter fans

You have called your coach out. You have dreamed that you would win. Then you go and beat the Boston Celtics in their own haughty arena in Sunday's Game 7 of the playoffs, a win that means you will now face off with LeBron James.

You are Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic, so whom do you thank?

Traditionally, a player might thank his family, his coach, his teammates, his very special conditioning coach. But, as if to prove just how much the world has changed, Dwight Howard went in a different direction.

Oh, he thanked God. As many … Read more

Buzz Out Loud 974: Black holes are made of people

Well, actually, people are made of black holes. But I couldn't do a Soylent Green reference if I wrote that. We also talk about Natali's Lady Things and the fact that we all wear makeup. Oh, and Sony is broke. And Jammie Thomas is going back to court. So it's not all good news.

And the trolls shall inherit the Web

Thomas Hobbes once described pre-social life as "nasty, brutish, and short." He couldn't have described Web commentary more aptly.

Hence, while Nick Carr has pondered whether Google is making us stupid, I wonder instead if the question should be, "Is the Web making us rude?"

I took a position on Twitter's policy change related to @Replies on Wednesday (briefly summarized, "People seem far more interested in complaining about the changes than in paying for the service"), and have been roundly excoriated since. Some have questioned my IQ, while others were content to … Read more

From Google economy to Twitter economy

I'm still processing the many great insights from the next09 conference in Hamburg, Germany, one of Europe's leading digital-creative-marketing forums. This year's theme was "Share Economy," and the 1,300 attendees consisted of European VCs and angel investors, Web 2.0 entrepreneurs, media, creative agencies, and executives from German corporations (from BMW and Deutsche Bank to Deutsche Telekom).

Jeff Jarvis: "The Great Restructuring"

The first day, the keynote day, was a little disappointing, maybe because expectations were so high. Jeff Jarvis warmed up the crowd with his trademark "What Would Google … Read more

Kanye to Twitter: I want my name back!

Kanye West, rapper and, um, other things has a blog. He is happy with his blog. And he does not need to join the Twitterati.

However, having discovered that there are fake Twitter accounts in his name, Kanye took to his blog to, in his words, offer a "spaz" because of "losers making fake Kanye West Twitter accounts."

And what a spectacular spaz this was. In its way, quite a thoughtful spaz too.

He began, in rather untwitteresque caps, by saying: "DON'T HAVE A F****** TWITTER... WHY WOULD I USE TWITTER??? I ONLY BLOG … Read more
