After getting the green light from the FCC just a couple of weeks ago, Research in Motion today officially took the wraps off the RIM BlackBerry 8820, the company's first smart phone with integrated Wi-Fi. Available through AT&T Wireless later this summer, the 8820 supports 802.11a/b/g standards and is compliant with Wi-Fi security protocols, including WEP and WPA. In addition, the BlackBerry 8820 is the company's thinnest full QWERTY device to date (beat it, BlackBerry Curve), and has built-in GPS for out-of-the-box support for location-based services such as TeleNav GPS Navigator. Sun Microsystems said Wednesday that AT&T plans to use its Sun Fire servers and storage arrays to power its Internet Protocol television service, called U-Verse.
The deal is significant for Sun because it could be a foot in the door to eventually sell AT&T its new, advanced Sun Streaming System, which includes Sun Fire servers and other technology that can be used to stream 160,000 simultaneous IP video … Read more
The iPhone may be the answer to what many people want in a smart phone, but it's unlikely to end the scourge known as CrackBerry addiction anytime soon: unless e-mail software like Synchronica's takes off.
Synchronica, based in the U.K., announced Wednesday that its Mobile Gateway 3.0 software will allow companies to deliver corporate e-mail to the iPhone without having to open the firewall or otherwise meddle with their security settings. It allows the iPhone's e-mail client to talk directly to Microsoft's Exchange e-mail servers through Outlook Web Access and doesn't require companies … Read more
If any of the thousands of people who waited in line two weeks ago at Apple and AT&T stores to purchase the iPhone have encountered buyer's remorse, Friday is deadline for a full refund.
Both Apple and AT&T will accept iPhone returns within 14 days of purchase. If you opened the box, there's a 10 percent restocking fee, but you won't be charged the early termination fee if you also want to cancel service with AT&T. After 14 days, you can cancel your service, but you can't return the iPhone. … Read more
AT&T's Samsung SGH-A437 doesn't put on airs. And that's fine, because there's really not much to say about it. The design is thin and unassuming, though we didn't love the flat controls. You'll find a decent selection of features, including a VGA camera with satisfactory picture quality, Bluetooth, messaging, and quad-band world roaming. Call quality was unimpressive, however. We encountered too much static on our end of the line. Read our review for the full scoop or check out our slide show.
We have more iPhone battery results from CNET Labs. The talk time, video time, and music time tests are completed and we can report that the iPhone largely delivers on its power promises. And just to remind you of those promises, the iPhone has a rated battery life of 8 hours talk time, 24 hours of music playback, 7 hours of video playback, and 6 hours of Internet use.
Talk time: When we tested the iPhone with the Wi-Fi function turned off, we got about 7 hours, 45 minutes of talk time. When we tested it with the Wi-Fi activated, … Read more
If you're thoroughly sick of the iPhone, I have good news, as AT&T has a new cell phone just for you. The carrier that landed Apple's superhyped handset is now carrying the Samsung SGH-A437. Offering a simple, thin design that somewhat resembles the Verizon's Samsung SCH-540, the SGH-A437 offers a decent feature set including Bluetooth, a VGA camera, and a speakerphone. You can get it in red, slate, and gold. It's just $69 with service.
Just in time for the iPhoneDevCamp this weekend (where Web developers will gather for a no-holds-barred effort to develop iPhone apps), Apple has released a Web development guide for the iPhone. The guide provides useful hints about the iPhone's abilities, how to integrate your app with the iPhone's phone, mail, and maps, the kinds of media types that the Safari browser supports, and more. Of course, there's also a link to the Safari for Windows beta, plus additional information about the Safari Webkit. If you're a potential iPhone developer, the guide is worth checking out. As … Read more
Immediately after we posted our Apple iPhone review, Senior Editor Donald Bell and I handed our iPhone off to CNET Labs for battery drain tests. And now we can report that our first results are in. Just to remind you, the iPhone has a rated battery life of 8 hours talk time, 24 hours of music playback, 7 hours of video playback, and 6 hours of Internet use.
Talk time: When we tested the iPhone with the Wi-Fi function turned off, we got about 7 hours, 20 minutes of talk time. When we tested it with the Wi-Fi activated, we … Read more
