Verizon Fios hits 1 million subscriber mark

CHICAGO--Verizon has signed up its one-millionth Fios subscriber, CEO Ivan Seidenberg said Wednesday during his keynote speech here at the NXTcomm tradeshow.

Verizon's been building its Fios all-fiber network throughout its territory for the past three years. The network takes fiber directly to people's door step, and provides near limitless bandwidth that can be used to deliver a triple play of services including high-speed Internet connectivity, telephone service, and TV. The company already offers Internet service that runs at 50 megabits per second. And it's testing service at 100Mpbs.

While AT'T has opted to only take … Read more

YouTube mobile now available for everyone

YouTube's mobile site has been live and available as of a few days ago. The service offers a hand-picked selection of videos users can watch on their mobile devices. Users have access to just the bare essentials, such as running time, rating, and a link to a video's page with more details. There is, however, no community aspect--no user comments, ratings, or video responses--the kind of things that make YouTube so interesting. Also missing is a dedicated video uploader, as mobile users are still required to submit their mobile videos via MMS messaging.

Instead of running in Flash, … Read more

Verizon's CTO talks

CHICAGO--Verizon's CTO Mark Wegleitner addressed a room full of reporters here Monday night on the eve of the NXTComm telecom tradeshow. During his brief talk, which followed a heavy meal of porterhouse steaks and veal chops at the famed Gibson's Steakhouse, he gave a glimpse into some new features and functionality that will soon be coming to the company's Fios, all-fiber network.

Here are some of the highlights:

Fios on speed: Verizon is already in the process of upgrading its Fios network to a technology called GPON or gigabit passive optical network, which will quadruple the … Read more

LG EnV now available in orange

If you're tired of the black hue of most gadgets, you might be interested in the LG EnV's newest shade of orange. It's otherwise the same device as the original black, but at least it'll be a tad more stylish. Though we can't help but think that green would've been a better fit for the "EnV" name. It's currently available for $149.99 with a two-year contract.

Whoa! Verizon may have itself a winner with the VX8700.

If you're looking to make a style statement, this one is up there with the Prada.

Where the VX8700 exceeds, though, is in usability and price. The RAZR-like pad makes dialing easy; the VCast videos (including snippets of each night's Letterman, Stewart and Leno) are crisp, clear - and with a tap on one button can be viewed horizontally.

The feel is perfect: solid, heavy enough but not overly so. It comes off class. Yeah, it's not THE most comfortable fit with your ear and it heats up a bit. But at $180 with a Verizon contract, … Read more

Moto's W385 on its way to Verizon

About this time of year, the new phones we saw at CTIA start to line up for their respective carriers. Last week, we told you that AT&T/Cingular was picking up the Samsung SGH-A717 and SGH-A727, and now Mobiledia is putting the Motorola W385 on deck for Verizon Wireless. Sporting a thin design that looks like a mashup of Moto's Razr and Krzr phones, the W385 has a low-end feature set that includes a VGA camera, a speakerphone, text and multimedia messaging, and Bluetooth. It should arrive at Verizon within the next couple of months.

Photos: Verizon Wireless G'zOne Type-S

How many times have you dropped your phone in the bathroom? Even if you haven't, you probably know someone who has. I have a friend who has dropped her phone in the bathroom at least five times, and each time she's had to find a replacement. If you're a klutz, you'll love the Verizon Wireless G'zOne Type-S. Not only is it water-resistant, it's military-tested to be shock- and dust-resistant as well. In short, this thing is as tough as nails. It's a little smaller and appears more streamlined than its big brother, the … Read more

LG VX8550 may be available from Verizon

Engadget has recently received news that the LG VX8500 Chocolate slider may be replaced soon with the LG VX8550, which is apparently much easier to use than the Chocolate, with its notoriously hard-to-use navigation pad. As the product images show, the LG VX8550 is slated to be available from Verizon some time soon. We really don't have much to go on other than that, but head on over to their site to check out the pics. We'll keep our eyes peeled for further information.

Verizon Wireless launches the rugged G'zOne Type-S

Verizon Wireless has just announced that it will be the exclusive provider of the Casio G'zOne Type-S rugged cell phone, starting tomorrow. A successor to the Type-V handset it debuted a year ago, the Type-S is much smaller and has a more streamlined designed, but it was still made with the same military-grade specifications. According to Verizon and Casio, it is able to withstand extreme humidity, three feet of water for up to 30 minutes, and drops from about five feet; it can also resist dust as fine as silica flour. It certainly looks rugged, too, with its sturdy … Read more
