MetroPCS plucks the apple-red Samsung Contour

MetroPCS has plucked the simple Samsung Contour (SCH-r250) for its lineup.

The candy-apple-red flip phone has a VGA camera, and both internal and external displays. The Contour is a very simple phone for making calls. Features-wise, it supports Bluetooth, multimedia messaging, and voice commands.

There's also a slew of MetroPCS apps, including MetroWeb for the Internet, e-mail with mail@metro, Metro 411 Directory Assistance, and MetroBackup.

The Contour is available now with MetroPCS for $49 without a contract.

MetroPCS starts prepaid phone cards

MetroPCS is now selling prepaid calling cards exclusively at Walmart. The By the Minute cards are available in two options: a $20 card comes with 500 voice minutes, or 4 cents per minute, and a $30 will entitle you to 1,000 minutes, or three cents per minute. For both cards, you can use the calling minutes at anytime.

Besides making calls, customers can use the By the Minute cards for messaging and data. The first card offers 50MB of Web access and the second comes with 100MB. Both include unlimited messaging, but picture messages will cost more.

Samsung Freeform II lands at MetroPCS

There's a new simple Samsung messaging phone available today at MetroPCS stores. The Samsung Freeform II (Samsung SCH-r360) is a candy bar phone whose QWERTY keyboard sits below a 2.2-inch QVGA display. Unlike its ruby red predecessor, the original Samsung Freeform, this sequel comes in black.

Texting and photo messaging are on board. You'll also find a 1.3 megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth, and speakerphone.

There's also an MP3 music player and a miscoSD slot that takes up to 16GB expandable memory.

MetroPCS launches second 4G LTE market

MetroPCS Communications opened its second 4G LTE market today, this one in the Dallas-Forth Worth area.

The new service follows the carrier's initial 4G LTE (Long Term Evolution) launch in Las Vegas last week. As in Vegas, the Dallas-Forth Worth service will offer prepaid monthly plans starting at $55, which include unlimited talk, text, and data, and require no contract.

MetroPCS launches first 4G LTE market and phone

MetroPCS launched the nation's first Long Term Evolution 4G wireless broadband network today in Las Vegas along with the first-ever commercial LTE handset.

Like all MetroPCS services, the new 4G wireless broadband service is prepaid and it doesn't require a contract. For $55 a month, users get unlimited talk, text, and data. And for an additional $5 a month, they also get 18 channels of streaming video.

MetroPCS to launch LTE in September

MetroPCS has plans to launch its LTE network in September using Samsung networking equipment, according to Jaebeom Choi, a Samsung executive in charge of systems research and development. The Wall Street Journal reports that MetroPCS will also have a Samsung phone called the Samsung Craft (also known as the Samsung SCH-R900), which promises to be the first LTE phone. The first two markets to see MetroPCS' LTE network will be Las Vegas and Dallas.

MetroPCS offers the BlackBerry 8530 with unlimited plan

MetroPCS has announced that it will offer an unlimited everything plan for any customer who buys the BlackBerry 8530. The $60 plan also includes messaging, GPS turn-by-turn navigation, MetroPCS's backup service, Metro Banking, directory assistance, and all taxes are included in the price. The 8530 costs $230 if you buy it from MetroPCS, but that's because there's no contract.

Get a text of your voice mail

MetroPCS announced Tuesday a new feature that will deliver text messages of your voice mail messages straight to your cell phone. When a caller leaves a voice mail, the message will be converted to text format and sent to your messaging in-box. Users still can access the audio version of the message in the normal manner, but they'll also get the voice file as an attachment with the text message. MetroPCS is the first national carrier to offer the service, which costs $3 per month.

MetroPCS promises first LTE network and handset

LAS VEGAS--MetroPCS leaped ahead two of its larger rivals today when it announced that it would introduce 4G LTE networks in the second half of this year. The network, which will come first to Las Vegas, will run on a Samsung-powered infrastructure. Sammy also will provide Metro PCS's first LTE phone, the SCH-r900.
