Making Money from Free Software Panel 11/14/07 in Menlo Park

I am on a breakfast panel on November 14 down in Mountain View at the Orrick offices down in Menlo Park. Being that I get back from Japan the day before with the requisite jetlag I should be in rare form.

Here are just a few of the exciting topics: What does "commercial open source" mean and how is it different from "open source"? What benefits can I expect from releasing my product as open source? What are the costs? Does my choice of open source license matter? What do VCs think of the open source … Read more

Open source events in 2008

Here's a good, reasonably comprehensive list of open source events in 2008. It's missing some (like OSCON) but is intended to get better through community input. So, if you don't see your favorite conference there (Ubuntu Live, anyone?), let the site author know.

By the way, if you're a commercial open-source company, you may have already discovered what Alfresco has discovered: the open source events aren't very useful as lead generation tools. People don't go to Linuxworld looking for a content management system, for example.… Read more

Set up tickets, payment processing, and more with Eventsbot

If you're an event planner, there's a new Web service called Eventsbot that's set up to help you with some of the logistics of promoting, and selling tickets online. If you're familiar with EventBrite, Eventsbot isn't too far off: just set up your event, set ticket prices, promote it, and Eventsbot takes a small cut of the sales as its fee. The service is aimed mainly at event planners, but if you're looking to host a small event with controlled price ticketing, services like this can be a little more extensive than basic party … Read more

John Edwards heeds online voting, will visit tiny town

If you're a town of 229 people, and you're not in Iowa or New Hampshire, you're probably not going to be getting too many visits from top-tier presidential candidates these days.

Unless, however, you're Columbus, Ky. That tiny hamlet will be getting a visit from Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards on October 4, and it has the Internet to thank for it.

That's because Columbus beat out cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle and Dallas in the competition, hosted on the social-events site Eventful. Voters were tasked with helping to choose the location of … Read more

A guide to NYC's Digital Technology Week: Part II

Here you go: the rest of New York's Digital Technology Week, both the official and the unofficial. The Silicon Alley Insider, by the way, has a great list of some stuff going on around the city on Tuesday night that I missed in my earlier recap, involving Diggnation and a Natalie Portman nude scene. W-T-F, Wes Anderson?

WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 26 -- 11:30 AM ET: Guitar Hero III is unveiled in an event space near Times Square. It's invite-only, but knowing these things, some of the PR will spill out into the streets of midtown. -- 8 PM … Read more

A guide to NYC's Digital Technology Week: Part I

With the DigitalLife Expo, several other conferences, and a whole bunch of tech press from all over the place in town, it's rather fitting that the municipal government has decided to designate September 24-30 as "Digital Technology Week." But because this is New York and we're used to weekends that start on Wednesdays, the tech hubbub really starts, well, tonight. So get that workday wrapped up!

Words, actions speak different shades of green

Reporters on the front lines of climate change ate locally grown food from biodegradable tableware at the annual Society of Environmental Journalists conference held at Stanford University last week .

Yet, they also boarded gas-guzzling, air-conditioned buses to tour Google's solar headquarters, green buildings in San Francisco and area ecosystems. The nonprofit Environmental Defense handed out folders about safeguarding the oceans. These came inside vinyl shoulder bags that stank of the same toxic chemicals that poison waterways. Most of some 900 attendees flew to the event in petroleum-powered planes to discuss how to report about imperiled ecosystems, from the big … Read more

Yelp launches Events, a worthy Upcoming.org competitor

There's no doubt Yelp was going to add a local events and calendaring functionality to their popular user reviews service, and today they've done it with a new feature called Events. Coincidentally, last week brought about a refresh of Yahoo's Local service, which finally integrated Yahoo's own events service Upcoming.org.

Not surprisingly, Yelp Events is quite similar to Upcoming.org, with a landing page for each event, a comment board, and a list of yeses and maybes from community members to say whether they'll be attending. The main difference being the way user profiles … Read more

CNET News.com feature: Big media hunts for Web cred, again

This summer has been an unusual hunting season for the start-up world, with nascent Internet companies firmly in the crosshairs of major media conglomerates.

This month alone, Hearst Publications purchased social-shopping site Kaboodle, The New York Times "absorbed" the Freakonomics blog, and bookmarking start-up Clipmarks was rumored to be in the midst of a deal with Forbes.

In July, cable conglomerate Discovery Communications snapped up eco-blog TreeHugger. And this spring, CBS Interactive acquired both music community Last.fm and finance video blog Wallstrip.

CNET News.com feature: All the news that's fit to link

If you ask new-media pundit Jeff Jarvis, the humble hyperlink ought to be counted high in the ranks of digital-age phenomena that have transformed the face of news reporting and consumption.

"The hyperlink has changed everything," asserted Jarvis, who runs media criticism site BuzzMachine and political blog PrezVid. Citing the motto "do what you do best, and link to the rest," he said that news outlets can achieve new levels of efficiency through the ability to direct readers to click elsewhere for more information. In one sense, it's the 21st-century equivalent of a newspaper running … Read more
