Okay, I admit it: I want an iPhone.
I'm surrounded by them these days, it seems. On the bus. On the streets. At work. Everywhere I go, I see people pulling them out and the gadget hound in me is suffering a little bit.
Since the iPhone came out, and since Apple announced the iTouch, I've been parroting a standard line when anyone asks when--not if--I'm going to get one: I say, either when the iPhone is available on Verizon, my carrier, or when the iTouch has a 60 GB hard drive. Whichever comes first.
But, I … Read more
A simple plea to AT&T: Texts ARE data!
With that said, my travels ended and I got my first AT&T invoice from my far-flung travels. I managed to stick to a lean 15 MB of data used (both downloaded and uploaded) on the iPhone. I called stateside a handful of times using the international roaming plan, which reduced the charge per minute to $1.29 from $1.69. I found myself becoming the master of keeping calls from rounding up to the next chargeable minute (my average call time to the States was 2:59). In … Read more
LG sneakily showed off the LG CU515 last night to little fanfare, as the Venus and the Voyager took the limelight. It's a shame, because the LG CU515 is no slouch when it comes to features--not only is it packed with a 1.3-megapixel camera and a music player, it is also one of AT&T's new HSDPA phones. Clearly a successor to the LG CU500V, the LG CU515 is also compatible with AT&T's Video Share, letting customers share real-time streaming video with each other. The quad-band phone will also support AT&T'… Read more
The exact details of AT&T's revenue-sharing agreement with Apple have not been disclosed, but one analyst thinks that over the two-year life of a user contract, the amount exceeds the actual price of the iPhone.
Silicon Alley Insider spotted a research note from Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster estimating that Apple is receiving $18 per month for each iPhone subscriber, under the revenue-sharing agreement between the two companies. Apple has confirmed that such an agreement exists, but has not shared the details about exactly how much cash it's getting from the revenue AT&T makes … Read more
Throughout all the hoopla over the hacking of the iPhone, it was never very clear how many people were actually trying to escape from AT&T. Apple ventured a guess on Monday.
During a conference call to discuss the company's blowout fourth quarter, Apple Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook said that of the 1.4 million iPhones sold since June 29, 250,000 were bought with unlocking in mind.
"Where we don't know precisely how many people are doing that, our current guess is there were probably 250,000 of the 1.4 million that we … Read more
If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.
That seems to be the philosophy AT&T has taken when it comes to citywide Wi-Fi. Only a few years ago, AT&T was lobbying in city councils and statehouses around the country trying to prevent cities from building their own broadband networks. AT&T and other service providers argued that these new networks would compete unfairly with their own broadband services.
But a little over a year ago, the company had a change of heart. And instead of battling local governments in court and in the legislature, AT&… Read more
