Philips' new portable DVD players integrate an iPod dock

In 2006, we saw a few portable DVD players that integrated an iPod dock so you could playback your iPod videos on the DVD player's larger screen. But Philips has taken iPod integration to a slicker level with two upcoming portable DVD players, the DCP750 and DCP850. Both are wide-screen models that feature 7- and 8.5-inch swiveling screens, respectively. Philips says they'll also have a built-in SD and MMC card reader, and both players will debut in the "first quarter" of 2007 with suggested retail price tags of $149 and $199.

They won't offer … Read more

Belkin's TuneStudio is cute and compact, but it's legit

So maybe you don't have a recording studio in your basement. But if your musical ambitions go beyond playing "Freebird" on Guitar Hero, you might be interested in this new product from Belkin that's making its debut this week at CES. The TuneStudio, as it's called, might look like something like a Fisher-Price "My First Recording Studio" with its compact size and bright colors, but it's actually a pretty hardcore piece of equipment. You can plug in up to four audio sources (you know...mics, guitars, old-school beat boxes). There's a … Read more

Ford and Microsoft in Sync for in-car infotainment

As we first reported in December, Ford and Microsoft have been busy working in collaboration on in-car communications and entertainment, to be unveiled this week at CES. Well, here we are today at CES, and we can spill the beans on details of the system to be marketed under the name "Sync."

Initially to be made available in twelve 2008 models across the Ford family and across the entire 2009 lineup from FoMoCo, the service will be a fully-integrated, flash memory-based system that enables drivers to call hands-free and to control a range of digital audio via voice … Read more

iPod me..

Ok, so I'm not the most tech-savvy person around; heck, I only recently learned how to take and send photos with my cell phone. The good news is I have a picture I took of a snow-covered Mt. Hood that I have set as wallpaper on my phone, so I am all set for next Christmas until I have to think about changing it again in 2007. But here's an even better challenge. I'm still trying to figure out how to get my Gateway MP3 player to play the songs I loaded on it three years ago. … Read more

Bon voyage with the i-Trunk

What would a true Mac loyalist want if stranded on a desert island? The "i-Trunk," of course. (Presuming that a solar charger or other power source was available.)

French designer Pinel & Pinel not only makes luggage but delivers its pieces fully equipped and "custom-finished to your specifications and preferences," according to Cool Hunting--in this case, with a 20-inch, iMac, JBL speakers and Canon printer. But the best part is the design of the case itself, which resembles a giant iPod when open.

Other models, which come in 51 colors, are outfitted with such equipment as … Read more

Create interactive iPod content with Mogopop.com

There's all kind of content out there that's available for cell phones: games, ringtones, wallpapers, some of it cool and some of it just plain annoying. Now that iPods are capable of just about everything short of dialing up the local pizzeria (no, this is not a post about "iPhone" rumors) it's about time that third-party Web sites started offering loads of multimedia to fill up your little Apple device. (Can't you see it's hungry?) Enter Mogopop, which is a way for iPod owners to download a wide range of media to their … Read more

Apple iTV: coming in early February with a built-in hard drive?

By this time next week, Steve Jobs' Macworld Expo keynote address will be history. While guesses about what will be announced run the gamut from the mundane (OS X upgrades) to the lustful (iPod phone and/or wide-screen video iPod), it's a near certainty that we'll get more details on Apple's so-called iTV product. The iTV--its final name is still pending--is Apple's take on the digital media receiver. It's a small box designed to stream your computer-based iTunes media (movies, TV shows, music, podcasts) to your big-screen TV and home theater system--basically, a networked &… Read more

Can't wait for pics of an 'iPad killer'

So maybe you think living in a building inspired by a certain ubiquitous digital audio player--or, let's be real, ANY sort of gadget--sounds silly. We don't blame you.

But check out the new pics of the iPad anyway--they're actually kind of fantastic.

The budget for the 23-story Dubai apartment/office building, announced last week, is $800 million (or 3 billion Dirhams), and developers plan to open the iPad's doors in 2009.

And, yes, that is a "docking station" the building will be resting on at an alarmingly accurate 6-degree angle.

iPod shower adapter sorely needs a karaoke mic

This is a travesty. A total travesty. Gearlog has tracked down a good-looking, well-priced ($19.99) device that lets you listen to your iPod in the shower, but it's missing something. Sure, it'll keep your iPod nice and dry, and it even comes with a clock and a radio, but there's no microphone. All issues of personal hygiene aside, the only real purpose of a shower is to provide a singing venue in which tone-deafness can be slightly tempered by running water. I mean, duh, everybody knows that. And if you're enough of a music addict … Read more

A Fendi case to accent your iPod trunk

We're continually surprised at the things we learn while assembling material for Crave. We had no idea, for example, that Karl Lagerfeld was such an iPod fanatic. So much so, in fact, that he has more than 100 of them, according to Sybarites, and has even designed an iPod trunk for Fendi. (Maybe he needs one for each new recipe he concocts.)

But if you're a simple person and just want an individual case, the uber-designer has created one made of leather and velvet with Fendi's trademark Zucca print. Regardless of whether it's your color, we'… Read more
