Leaked: New Sony laptops

As Lenovo can attest, it's tough to keep a secret in the Internet age. Today Sony joined the club of PC makers with leaked product plans, as forum posters at NotebookReview uncovered details of new Vaio laptops buried deep on Sony's European site.

The new models, reportedly due in July, will include the 11.1-inch ultraportable TZ11 (a follow-up to the existing TX series), the 13.3-inch SZ5, and two new models in the 15.4-inch FZ series. In addition to refreshing the systems with Intel's new Santa Rosa chipset and X3100 graphics, Sony will also be … Read more

AMD, Intel lawyers spin the spinners' spinning

Here's a suggestion: let's settle Advanced Micro Devices' antitrust case against Intel during an episode of The Apprentice, and let The Donald sort out the sniping.

One might be forgiven for a sigh of resignation over the latest round of potshots between the two chipmakers, which has now drawn the respective PR reps for each company's legal interests into the debate. This dispute is over the spin attached to Intel's embarrassing remediation report, released on Monday with details on how the company plans to recover missing e-mails believed to be relevant to AMD's antitrust caseRead more

Lenovo jumps gun on Intel's Santa Rosa launch

Intel doesn't plan to introduce the next version of its Centrino notebook technology until May 9, but Lenovo is all ready to start shipping ThinkPads with the new chips.

DailyTech spotted specifications for new ThinkPad T61 and R61 laptops up on Lenovo's site Tuesday, but they are gone now (hopefully not along with the guy who posted them). The systems used Intel's next-generation Santa Rosa notebook technology, with four Core 2 Duo processors between them at various clock speeds up to 2.4GHz, a new graphics chipset, and Intel Turbo Memory, which is what the marketing department … Read more

Spotted: Lenovos with Centrino Pro

NotebookReview pointed us to spec lists for the refreshed ThinkPad T61 and ThinkPad R61, both of which will be built on the platform formerly known as Santa Rosa. The announcement is limited to new configurations for the Asia Pacific region, but we don't think it much of a stretch to assume we'll see similar Centrino Pro ThinkPads in the States.

One of the most intriguing features listed on the Lenovo page is the "Intel Turbo Memory 1GB hard drive for faster performance." We assume this is the official name for the Robson caching technology Intel demonstrated … Read more

Intel outlines plans to find missing e-mail

Intel filed a report late Monday night outlining how it plans to recover e-mail that it failed to preserve following the filing of Advanced Micro Devices' antitrust lawsuit against the company.

Last month, Intel said that a number of employees had failed to properly preserve e-mail related to AMD's allegations after some people forgot to save "sent" e-mail or assumed IT was backing up their folders. The report doesn't have much in the way of details beyond what Intel has already said, that despite the breakdown in its document retention policies it thinks it can cobble … Read more

Intel regains market share over AMD in Q1

It was fun while it lasted.

Market analysts say that Intel regained large chunks of market share from AMD in the first quarter. Analyst firm iSuppli says Intel's market share jumped from 75.7 percent in the fourth quarter to 80.2 percent in the first quarter. AMD, meanwhile, sank from 15.7 percent to 11.1 percent.

Sam Bhavnani of Current Analysis, meanwhile, broke it down by type of computer for U.S. retail (about 11 percent of the worldwide market). In desktops, Intel rose from a 46 percent share to a 58 percent share while it saw … Read more

Intel takes Metro to IDF

Intel showed off an interesting concept laptop this week at the spring Intel Developer Forum in Beijing. The ultrathin laptop, which Intel is calling the Metro, measures just 0.7 inches thick and weighs a scant 2.2 pounds. The Metro's most unusual feature is neither its secondary display (which we've seen here) nor its colorful array of leather wraps (which we've seen here).

It's the shoulder strap that promises to attract the attention of female tech buyers and purse snatchers alike. While the Metro lets you leave your laptop bag behind, I hope that shoulder … Read more

Put a McCaslin in your pocket

Ultramobile PCs, or UMPCs, such as the OQO model 02 or the Vulcan FlipStart, are pocket-sized computers that look cool but haven't been all that useful yet. Intel's been planning a new, more practical platform for ultramobile devices for a while now, and today the first official details about the new spec--dubbed McCaslin--were revealed.

Officially named the Ultra Mobile Platform 2007, these new handheld systems will have Intel's new A100 and A110 processors (code named Stealey) and a 945GU Express Chipset--all designed to run with very little power. Linux support is also a highly touted new option. … Read more

Meet the winners of Intel's PC design competition

Intel announced today the winners of its Intel Core Processor Challenge, a competition with a total of $1 million in prize money that encouraged computer manufacturers to use its Viiv processor technology to create a high-performance, media-savvy machine. The winners, well, aren't particularly earth-shattering.

You do have to keep in mind that these are legitimate working PCs, not trippy concept designs created under the influence of what-have-you. So when Intel talks about the "best mix of style, acoustics, functionality and features for digital home entertainment," you have to take that with a grain of (pragmatic) salt.

A mobile Internet device from Intel?

The acronym UMPC is anything but a household word--and equally obscure, at least to the masses of computer buyers, are the handheld gadgets that the term describes, despite the best efforts of heavyweights like Microsoft and Samsung.

UMPCs, or "ultramobile personal computers," debuted around this time last year, as Microsoft's Origami software effort unfolded into yet another form factor for computing tech that fits in a pocket, more or less. Samsung's Q1 device made the biggest splash, and then quickly sunk out of sight until version two, the Windows Vista-based Q1 Ultra, appeared at last month'… Read more
