PlayStation 3 owners will find an update available for their console's firmware today. According to Sony, version 2.36 will offer increased "system stability when playing select PlayStation format software titles." Sony will soon add a Google Internet search feature as part of a software update for the PlayStation Portable.
On the PSP blog Monday, Sony said the new upgrade, v4.00, "replicates the Google Internet search experience.
PSP users will need to be connected to the Web via Wi-Fi. The move represents Sony's continued efforts to expand the Internet features of the handheld. Of course, what users really want is an easy way to download movies off the Web.

Custom shops have been painting PlayStations red for years, but Sony is only now getting around to doing the same itself in Japan--and even at that, it's only the PS2, not the newer PS3. Nine years after its launch, the PlayStation 2 will be draped in "Cinnabar Red" this summer for 16,000 yen, or about $152, according to I4U News.

It's been awhile since we saw the PSP change its colors, maybe because it had nowhere to go but down after champagne. But the latest version of Sony's handheld comes in metallic blue in a special edition to commemorate the 20th anniversary of John Madden's pioneering football titles.

When we reviewed the Sony PSP Headset a few months ago, we determined that it worked perfectly fine with the console's newly enabled Skype feature--so long as you scrounged up the accessory extension cable needed to enable the two-way communication function. The problem was that the headset didn't include the cable: you needed to buy another set of Sony headphones--the PSP earbuds--just to get the included cable. It was one of those corporate catch 22s that seems to be par for the course in the world of consumer electronics.

A new report on the tech habits of women shows that the female of the species is edging out the male in the areas of DVR use and ownership of portable game devices.
The study, done independently by Solutions Research Group, and released Thursday, was undertaken to explore the "digital lifestyles" of American women. Data was collected from more than 2,000 respondents between October 2006 and February 2008.

All in all, it's been a pretty good week for Sony's PSP, at least in Japan. First it gets a new color in the special "Bronze Edition," and now it has its own cradle. The latter isn't designed to enhance the gaming experience, according to Slippery Brick, but to make it easier for Japanese consumers to watch TV on the device using that country's 1seg signals while charging it at the same time.
