AT&T saves some trees

AT&T has dropped its ridiculously long iPhone bills that quickly became a laughingstock of the cell phone industry. Customers with now get a summary bill that will run about three pages. Full statements will details of each phone call and data transfer will continue to be available on AT&T's Web site.

The first round of iPhone bills quickly became conversation pieces after the first batch was mailed. Because the bills detailed each time the user accessed the Internet, even if the surfing session lasted under a minute, the bills were tens of pages long. Though … Read more

The Ents will be happy

AT&T informs the horned one on his iPhone that it is "removing itemized detail" from its bills to iPhone customers. That only took two months too long.

For customers who may be servants of the Lidless Eye, you can still get a full paper bill.

Seriously, who other than someone submitting an expense report to Mordor needs a bill with 10,000 $0.00 line items?

Nokia 6085: good for calling, not for multimedia

Despite what you may be thinking the Nokia 6085 is not a simple AT&T copy of the Nokia 6086. Though the two phones look a lot alike, the 6085 lacks the 6086's Wi-Fi support and it comes in four sparkling colors. Yet that's perfectly fine, as the 6085 reinforces Nokia's reputation for producing quality mid-range handsets. Though its internal and external displays could use a makeover, the 6085 is a functional cell phone with decent call quality and a low-key design. Multimedia performance wasn't fantastic, but that's not really the point of the … Read more

The Gizmo Report: Option's GT Max 3.6 Express for AT&T

You might wonder why I'm posting again so soon after that twelve-post blogging marathon at Hot Chips. Well, I got a new gizmo last night and I just had to write about it.

Two years ago yesterday, I bought a Sierra Wireless AirCard 860 (a PCMCIA cellular modem card) from Cingular for my Apple PowerBook G4. I also… Read more

Photos: LG Trax

The LG Trax is the latest HSDPA phone to cushion AT&T's lineup of high-speed devices. It supports AT&T's new video calling service, Video Share, as well as all the other AT&T broadband services like AT&T Music and AT&T's Cellular Video. The rest of its features are pretty decent as well, like a 1.3-megapixel camera, a music player, stereo Bluetooth, and quad-band support. The external screen has a mirrored surface when the phone is inactive, and there's a strange-looking touch-sensitive strip underneath it that acts as … Read more

Vlingo, a new voice-to-text service launches

Vlingo is a new mobile voice service launching today. It centers around a small Java app that lets you talk into your handset to create a text message instead of using your phone's keypad. The service is its own SMS client, piggybacking off your phone to send the message, although it forgoes using your phone's native SMS app, or word dictionary. In addition to texting, Vlingo is launching with voice to text services for mobile music stores and mapping services. The maps come courtesy of Yahoo, and can be zoomed and navigated just like accessing the mobile version … Read more

Ungreen iPhone paper bills

In July, I got an invoice from AT&T that I thought was an aberration--it was slightly longer than my previous bills with my Razr, but my last invoice spanned the period where I had both phones--maybe that was it, right? Well, I just got my latest iPhone-only bill, and it turns out that the eco-unfriendly bill was not an aberration.

So, while my monthly total bill is now a noticeable $10 cheaper because I changed my data and SMS text plans, my monthly paper invoice has grown noticeably larger and heavier--89 pages in total--about 30 percent bigger than … Read more

Apple sells refurbished iPhones

Yes, they've been on sale for only two months, but refurbished iPhones are now available for purchase on Apple's Web site. You can get both versions at a $100 discount with free shipping. That puts the 8GB model at $499 (17 percent off the original price) and the 4GB model at $399 (21 percent off). All the features are the same, including that required AT&T two-year contract, unless that is, you can get around it.

While the $100 discount may be good news to wannabe iPhone owners with smaller budgets, it sparks a interesting question. Just … Read more

AT&T admits it censored other bands

It looks like Pearl Jam isn't the only band that has had its politically charged comments bleeped from concerts streamed from AT&T's Blue Room Web site.

AT&T issued a statement on Friday admitting that this kind of thing has happened before. And the company once again apologized.

"It's not our intent to edit political comments in Webcasts on attblueroom.com," the company said in a statement. "Unfortunately, it has happened in the past in a handful of cases. We have taken steps to ensure that it won't happen again.&… Read more
