Crunching the numbers: What Apple's iPhone strategy should be

While reading AppleInsider today, I came across two stories about analyst opinions on the current state and future of the iPhone. And while both provide some valuable information about where Apple may stand in its contract with AT&T, they made me think -- what should Apple be doing to maximize profit and shareholder value?

Rumor: Red iPhone in the works?

Apparently someone managed to get a hold of an internal inventory sheet from AT&T that shows the iPhone may be available in red. This goes quite nicely with Apple's other colorful devices, especially the Product (RED) iPod nano. I agree with Engadget's skepticism that the inclusion of a 4GB unit in the list makes us wonder about the inventory sheet's legitimacy (Apple has just stopped selling them, after all). Sure, a red cell phone isn't big news, but, well, it's the iPhone. In red, just in time for the holidays, perhaps.

First sightings of Samsung BlackJack numero dos

Details are a little sketchy at this point, but it seems the sequel to the Samsung BlackJack is baking in the oven. The folks over at Mobile Phones Reviews and Tips (via Engadget Mobile) have some specs and images of the Samsung SGH-i617, which has actually passed FCC tests. The Windows Mobile 6 smartphone keeps a similarly sleek form factor with a full QWERTY keyboard, upgrades to a 2-megapixel camera, works on the HSDPA 850/1900 networks, and looks to be AT&T-bound. AT&T defends plan to detect customers' Net piracy

WASHINGTON--An AT&T executive on Wednesday sought to defuse fears that forthcoming tools aimed at identifying pirates on its network will harm the average Net surfer's online experience.

The planned tactic is "not about heavy-handed tactics that go after the vast majority of our customers that want to consume content legally," AT&T assistant vice president of regulatory policy Brent Olson said at an antipiracy summit here hosted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
