May I wiggle my bottom while being honest with you?
I have never heard the following phrase: "I am phabulously, phenomenally phlabbergasted with my phablet."
Indeed, though I have seen the word written down and projected upon my eyes, I have never, ever heard anyone actually say "phablet".
Perhaps it's like "parenthesis" and "prestidigitation." Words that strike eyes, but never leave mouths. It could be that no one actually knows what their phone-tablet hybrid is really called.
I mention this, bottom awiggle, because news reaches me that "phablet" had … Read more
Gone are the glory days of software development, when little-guy developers were often on the same playing field as the big boys.
That's a shame, as there are plenty of good coders out there with good ideas. Which brings us to today's deal: for a limited time, Tumbling Dice Software is offering the Super Writer word processor for $9.95 when you apply coupon code TDS-45K2D478BJ at checkout. Regular price: $19.95.
I'll just stop right here and note that there are any number of word processing programs you can get for free, everything from Google Docs … Read more
Textilus Word Processor Free is a feature-loaded rich-text editor and word processor for the iPad that works largely as advertised, albeit with some performance issues. It's easy to ignore the handful of small issues, though, because this is truly a powerful app, allowing you to create any number of documents optimized for display on the iPad and easy to share with anyone because they are created in RTF.
When you first open the app, you can immediately start creating new documents or you can load existing RTF files from your iCloud, Dropbox, or Scrivener cloud accounts. We suggest you … Read more
Bret Taylor, the former CTO at Facebook and an engineer who helped launch Google Maps, has launched a new company called Quip intent on creating a "productivity suite for the mobile era."
Along with Kevin Gibbs, the former technical lead on the Google App Engine team, Taylor has built what he calls a modern word processor that allows for collaborative document editing across myriad mobile and desktop devices. The company, which has reportedly raised $15 million in venture capital, launched an iOS app Tuesday evening.
The pair said they are motivated by the growing trend of accessing the … Read more
A couple weeks back I suggested that Kingsoft Office Free 2013 might just be the best Microsoft Office alternative you can get, especially if you need only the core elements: word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations.
Kingsoft offers a Pro version, of course, one that includes more goodies. A one-year license normally sells for $29.95, but today only, Giveaway of the Day has Kingsoft Office Professional 2013 (Win) absolutely free.
Words Crossword Puzzle provides a unique spin on the crossword puzzle that is at times challenging, and in many ways frustrating, but potentially rewarding for the right audience of word-puzzle lovers. Instead of supplying clues, Words Crossword Puzzle asks players to move a pile of letters into blank spaces to finish words already onscreen, in a sort of half Sudoku, half crossword variant.
The app starts with 30 puzzles, available in five languages, with the goal of taking a certain number of letters and placing them on a crossword grid to finish words that are already started. The challenge comes … Read more
Leaked from today's 404 episode:
- Weird Al Yankovic says next album will be his last.
- Australian scientists uncover "God's bathtub."
- These Blu-ray discs will last 1,000 years.
- You guys, Xanga is about to shut down unless we give them $60k.
For over a year now I've championed Kingsoft Office Free 2012 as one of the top Microsoft Office alternatives for Windows, and with good reason: It's one of the best-looking clones out there, with superb file-compatibility to boot.
Yesterday, Kingsoft unveiled Office Free 2013 (Windows). (Please see below before you install it.) I'll go out on a limb and say it's now the single best free replacement for Microsoft Office, for a couple of very good reasons.
In case you're unfamiliar with it, Kingsoft Office includes three modules: Writer, Spreadsheets, and Presentations. Needless to say, … Read more
We suggest taking a look at Carolina Road's Jarte, a free, tabbed-based, Word-compatible word processor built upon WordPad. It's fast and reliable, like WordPad, but it adds some features, such as single-click bookmarking, mouse scroll wheel cut-and-paste capability, and dictionary and thesaurus reference tools. Jarte is available in installed and portable versions; there's also a paid upgrade (still less than Word, though). The latest version of Jarte is compatible with Windows 8; we tried it in Windows 7.
Jarte's installer let us choose whether to install some components, such as dictionary and spell checker tools for … Read more
