Duplicate vs. Save As in OS X Lion

One of the features in OS X Lion that has gained some attention is the new Duplicate command that Apple has implemented to replace the age-old Save As feature in the Mac OS. The Save As function has become a regular option in programs that many have relied on, and to see it changed in Lion has raised some concern and disappointment; however, exploring the feature should show that it can perform similar functions as the Save As feature, albeit not without question to its necessity.

Since early in their development, computer systems have had basic Save commands to preserve … Read more

Logitech's Google TV box matches Apple TV at $99

When it was released last year, Google TV was touted as the next big thing. However, things haven't panned out quite as planned. The service has had a rough go of it, with buggy software and networks blocking access to content. But don't count it for dead quite yet.

Logitech, one of Google's partners in the launch of Google TV has slashed the price of its Revue with Google TV system from $249 to $99, matching the price of Apple TV and Roku's new Roku 2 XS. On top of the price drop, Logitech says the more affordable box will be upgradeable to Version 2 of Google TV that includes Android Market later this summer.

Here's what Logitech had to say in a short statement: … Read more

Apple Time Capsule refresh to coincide with Lion?

Supply of Apple's Time Capsule hardware is reportedly becoming scarce in the days ahead of the company's Worldwide Developers Conference, a sign that a new version of the product could be just around the corner.

Time Capsule, which was released at the beginning of 2008, combines a wireless router with a hard drive, giving users a way to store files on the device. It's also tied to Apple's built-in Time Machine backup software, which made its debut as a part of Leopard. That software is able to tap into the Time Capsule to wirelessly store backups … Read more

Flip the page

When we first saw the title of this program, we were hoping that it would help us create the flip books of our youth, those tiny cartoons in book form that were animated by the flipping of the pages. As it turns out, Flip Book Maker Free Version is actually a program for creating virtual photo albums, which in our opinion isn't quite as fun. That said, the program still does a good job at what it's meant for, and it's worth checking out if you miss flipping through physical photo albums in this age of digital … Read more

Nook Color gets Flash support, curated app store

A month ago we reported that Barnes & Noble was set to roll out a major software update for the Nook Color in April. This morning, Barnes & Noble finally flipped the switch on that update, which is a customized version of Android OS 2.2 (Froyo) and most notably adds a free built-in e-mail client, Flash support for Web browsing, and an app store with a selection of more than 125 free and paid apps.

Those who've already "rooted" the $250 Nook Color with custom firmware that's been circulating on the Web for months will … Read more

Windows-integrated CVS client

CVS, aka the Concurrent Version System, lets software developers access a centrally maintained project via a client-server architecture, which helps keep versions under control. TortoiseCVS is a free CVS client that integrates itself into the Windows shell with context menu entries as well as tortoise icons identifying all CVS-controlled files. It replaces the command-line CVS interface and lets you view and edit CVS-controlled files from inside Windows Explorer. The program's name and mascot play on the Windows shell association (the mascot even has a name, Charlie Vernon Smythe), which is fairly unique to TortoiseCVS, since most CVS clients run … Read more

Angry Birds slingshotting to PS3, XBox 360, Wii

Angry Birds on the big screen? No, a movie deal hasn't been inked yet, but console versions are in the works. According to a BBC blog, Rovio, the developer of the megapopular smartphone game, is hoping to release Angry Birds on the PS3, XBox 360, and Wii next year.

Also in the works: Angry Birds 2. The new game will apparently have more pigs--and they'll be more active.

"It won't be a sequel or a prequel but a different type of game featuring the same characters," said Rovio CEO Peter Vesterbacka. "The pigs will … Read more

Applications may break after reinstalling OS X

Sometimes a reinstall of the operating system is the easiest way to tackle multiple or nonsuperficial problems with computers, since doing this will refresh the underlying operating system software and hopefully clear any corruption and configurations that may be causing the issues.

Apple has progressively made the process of reinstalling easier, to the point where now it is practically seamless to pop in the Snow Leopard installation DVD and run a reinstallation, then perform an autoupdate and be right back where you were, maybe. In some instances, after performing reinstallations people may find certain applications will not work anymore.

Tackling OS version mismatches when updating

Sometimes installers for small system patches will impose OS version requirements, which means you will need to have at least the required version of OS X installed in order to apply the patch. While this usually is not a problem, some people may find installers claiming they do not have the proper version of OS X installed, when in fact they are fully updated with the proper version requirements.

When this happens there are a couple of things you can try:

Re-download the update

Try re-downloading the update from the Apple Support website, and apply it manually. Instead of Software … Read more
