Photo Transfer App doesn't disappoint

Photo Transfer App is one of the simplest solutions I've encountered for transferring photos and videos between mobile and desktop devices -- so long as your devices are all on the same Wi-Fi network.

When you open the app on your device, it immediately asks if you want to send or receive files (only photos and videos are supported). Once you make your choice, it asks if you'll be transferring with an Apple computer, Windows computer, or mobile device (Android or iOS only). Whichever option you choose, your devices will have to be on the same Wi-Fi network … Read more

Transmit even faster

Transmit was already one of the very best FTP clients for the Mac, and it's only gotten better with its long-awaited leap to version 4.

The two most noticeable things about the new Transmit are faster speeds (especially when dealing with lots of smaller files) and a completely revamped, more Finder-like interface. Transmit's snappy, animated new interface makes workflows more natural and streamlined than ever. The file browsing has also gotten easier, with new features like "Places" (for storing shortcuts to frequently used folders) and useful Finder-style functionality (which has been showing up in other FTP … Read more

Transfer Windows Phone photos to a Mac

I have to believe there are at least a few Mac fans who also happen to own a Windows Phone. Even if I'm wrong, I suspect that anyone raised on the "think different" mantra will be curious to see what happens when a Mac and a Windows Phone (literally) hook up.

The frustrating answer is that nothing happens when you connect a Windows phone to a Mac. To transfer anything on or off your Windows phone using a Mac, you must first install Microsoft's Free Windows Phone 7 Connector app.

Once installed, you'll have an … Read more

Use Bump to transfer pics from iPhone, Android to your computer

Bump, an app normally associated with transferring contact info and photos by physically bumping devices together, is also capable of transferring photos between your Android device or iPhone with your computer. The process is simple, free, and only takes a few minutes to set up.

Begin by installing the app (Android | iPhone). After you have installed the app and set up your contact card (optional), swipe to the right to view your photos.

Begin selecting the photos you would like to transfer to your computer. Once you're happy with your selection, set your device aside and open up the … Read more

Free desktop viewing and sharing

TeamViewer is an app that lets you connect to other Macs and PCs via the Internet to share desktops, transfer files, walk through presentations, and control other computers remotely. It's even free for noncommercial use, making it a great choice for your pro bono troubleshooting for friends and family, or for just accessing your own Mac from the road.

The interface is simple: you just open TeamViewer and you're prompted to either create a session or wait for one. A unique ID and password is created for each session, and you need TeamViewer on both computers (if you'… Read more

How to move data between Macs

While there are a number of online services available for sharing documents, photos, videos, and other items on your system, unless you manage all of your content through these services then the data on your system is still fairly confined to your computer. For instance, if you create a movie project on one system using iMovie, while you may upload the final product to YouTube or another service to share, the files used to create the movie might be gigabytes in size and be scattered around various locations on your hard drive.

If you decide you would like to move … Read more

Easily transfer photos and videos between Macs and iOS devices

Last year, Jason Cipriani covered Photo Transfer App, an iOS app that let you move photos and videos around on iOS devices and Macs and PCs. For the latter, it required a browser-based interface that required the cutting and pasting of URLs. Now, Mac users have it even easier; the Mac app provides easy drag-and-drop functionality.

The Photo Transfer Mac app is free, but you'll need to have the $2.99 iOS app on any device you'd like to connect to. Your devices need to be on the same Wi-Fi network, too.

Launch the Mac app and then … Read more

Avoid overage charges with My Data Manager

My Data Manager by Mobidia provides a simple, passive way of tracking your Android device's data usage. It's perfect if you have a limited data plan and are constantly trying to avoid those annoying overage charges.

Once you install My Data Manager, it automatically starts tracking your home data usage, roaming, and Wi-Fi usage, all in real time. It lists all of the active, data-connected apps on your device, the amount of raw data used in MBs, and the percentage of data transfer currently being used by each app. It even has pie charts.

But that's just … Read more

Four free must-have iPad apps for road warriors

These four free iPad apps transform the tablet into a clock radio, weather reporter, file manager, and multi-talented notepad.
