CNET Videos: Make iPads safe for kids, Apple Byte

CNET TV has a few new Apple-related videos available. With the iPad being one of the hot topics these days there are several that outline how to use features on the new device. Editor Donald Bell covers the settings in the iPhone OS for restricting kids from seeing inappropriate content. In addition, there are a couple of videos outlining unique or relatively hidden music playback features on the iPad, including making playlists and shuffling songs. Lastly, Brian Tong has a new Apple Byte episode, which covers the features of the upcoming iPhone OS 4.0 and some criticism of Apple's latest public moves.… Read more

Keep tabs on your tabs

We love tabbed browsing, but we often find ourselves with tons of tabs open. Sometimes they're simply things we forgot to close when we were done with them, but other times they contain pages that we want to return to. TooManyTabs for Chrome is a clever browser extension that helps you hang on to the tabs you're not done with without all the clutter.

TooManyTabs isn't the most intuitive application we've ever used, but after a bit of experimentation, it was pretty easy to figure out. It appears as an icon to the right of Chrome'… Read more

Wanted: A basic home theater receiver?

Today's receivers are so jam-packed with features they can be a hassle to set up and use. Even entry-level models boast features that flagship models from even just five years ago never had.

Is that a good thing? No manufacturer offers a receiver that's dead simple to use, sounds great, and has adequate connectivity to hook up a cable box, Blu-ray player, and one or two other sources.

Do you base your buying decision on the features lineup? Does the one with the most features win? Does your receiver really need to be THX Ultra2 Plus-certified, with four … Read more

Fix long and corrupt filenames

In Windows 95, Microsoft extended the allowable length of filenames beyond the former 8.3 convention. But filenames longer than 255 characters (or 260 characters in Vista) are still a problem; typically, such files cannot be opened or run, and often they cannot be renamed or deleted using Windows Explorer. File/Folder Clean-Up Tool (Long Path) purports to solve this problem by providing an Explorer-like interface with which to find and delete files and directories with long or corrupt names. Unfortunately, the trial version of the tool disables the actual delete function. With a price tag of $19, this application … Read more

Gadgettes 149: The single-purpose gadgets episode

OK. So we promised you on last week's episode that we would do a single-purpose gadgets episode this week. Turns out, promising that type of thing in advance isn't such a good idea as we actually had to work to find gadgets that fit the theme. So we made it, but admittedly by the skin of our collective teeth. It's all worth it for the segments, though. Patience, young grasshopper!

New Mac Minis: Still too expensive

First off, an admission: I've always wanted a Mac Mini. Sort of like I've always wanted a Mini Cooper convertible. But then I take a look at the price tag and it always seems too expensive. Call me cheap, but when you're at $600 (for the entry-level Mini) you start to ask yourself: what can I get for a few hundred bucks more--aside from the step-up $799 Mac Mini?

The answer is always a laptop. Now, the Mac Mini, of course, is basically a laptop without the screen. It uses laptop components. This new base system features … Read more

Too Short, 'I Ain't Trippin (James Pants Remix)': Free MP3 of the Day

There's something about the word "pants" that's just a little bit funny. The same is true with James Pants' music. Sarcastic, kitschy lyrics over crawly bass and fuzzed out beats make what Stones Throw asserts is one of their most eclectic releases to date.

Stunning panoramics made easy with MagToo

MagToo is a service for creating really simple slide shows and interactive panoramic photos you can share on your blog or social-networking profile or by e-mail. To help put what you share into context, MagToo also throws in geotagging, letting you stamp any of the content you've added with a specific place where it was taken. Other users can then browse through the items on a large world map like they would photos and videos on Flickr.

Of all the tools my favorite is the panorama maker. While I couldn't get any of the three tests I did … Read more

Hands-on with the Lucky Dragon phone

Finally, we got ourselves a set of M1's Lillian Too Lucky Dragon phones. For the uninitiated, Too is a best-selling author on the topic of feng shui. She hails from Malaysia and is an astute businesswoman, as well as a well-known follower of the ancient Chinese practice, so it makes a lot of sense that she conceived this idea. It's one of those things we carry around with us all the time, so having it as your lucky charm also is a logical step.

Just looking at pictures of this mobile phone doesn't quite prepare you to … Read more
