Bill Gates calls for reinvention of toilet: Why?

Bill Gates may have given up running Microsoft, but he isn't taking his retirement sitting down. The software-entrepreneur-turned-philanthropist's charitable foundation has launched a new initiative aimed at improving the health of the billions of people who have no safe, sanitary way to get rid of their waste.

That's right, Bill Gates wants to reinvent the toilet.

"No innovation in the past 200 years has done more to save lives and improve health than the sanitation revolution triggered by invention of the toilet," Sylvia Mathews Burwell, president of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's global development program, said in an address at a conference in Kigali, Rwanda, according to a written statement released by the foundation. "But it did not go far enough. It only reached one-third of the world. What we need are new approaches."

Forty percent of the world's population lacks access to flush toilets, and more than a billion people defecate in the open, according to the statement. That's not only revolting, but also tragic. UNICEF estimates that at least 1.2 million children under age 5 die of diarrhea each year, and contact with human feces is the main cause, Time reported.

Access to toilets could go a long way to preventing these deaths, the statement said.

In addition to preventing diarrhea, better access to toilets could boost school and work attendance of girls and women, who risk embarrassment and sexual assault when forced to relieve themselves in the open or use public restrooms.… Read more

Here comes the bride, all dressed in--toilet paper?

I'm told wedding dresses can cost thousands of dollars. But in these trying economic times, brides can seek inspiration in Susan Brennan, winner of a contest to design a wedding dress out of...toilet paper.

Brennan, of Orchard Lake, Mich., takes home a prize of $1,000 for this innovative gown for the throne, created from four rolls of toilet paper, some hot glue, and some packing tape, according to contest organizer Cheap Chic Weddings.

I've heard of turning office paper into toilet paper, but I confess I didn't know the latter could be the stuff of fashion.

I think rain could really ruin a wedding that featured this getup.

Still, the winners of this, the seventh contest of its kind, created some truly remarkable, detailed, and gorgeous dresses out of dead trees.

Nearly 1,000 dresses were submitted to the contest, including the gown created by Third-prize winner Cynthia Richards of Marietta, Ga., who pieced together her creation out of a whopping 20 rolls of bathroom tissue. You can see more pics of the dresses here.

Now if only Mr. Whipple were around to give away the bride. … Read more

Russian loos to be safe haven from terrorists?

Worried about car bombs or random acts of violence? Russia is pondering a solution in the form of bomb-proof public toilets. In a way, this makes perfect sense. After all, there are few situations where you'll feel more vulnerable than when you're sitting down with your pants around your ankles.

Made from super-strong fibrous concrete, the portable loos are expected to be able to withstand a bomb blast or, at the very least, protect the occupants from shrapnel.

Also, the new toilets are expected to protect from cold even in the dead of winter as the temperatures inside won't sink below 61 degrees F, Anatoly Ashmikhin, head of Santekhrabot, the company in charge of all Moscow's public toilets, told The Moscow News.

While the effectiveness of this scheme as a terrorist protection is questionable, it is a nod to the concerns of the public regarding terrorists threats.

Over or under? The science of toilet paper orientation

The folks at Engineering Degree have taken a scientific approach to answering one of the most critical questions of modern times--should toilet paper hang over or under? Check out their detailed infographic above, complete with Jay Leno's take on the issue and scientific equations to impress your postmodern nerd friends.

The in-depth look into the advantages and disadvantages of each toilet paper orientation was created as part of a viral marketing campaign for Engineering Degree, a resource for would-be engineers.

My personal take--if you really want to get good coverage in the trees and on the roof, it's essential to throw the roll with the paper hanging over. So, which way do you roll?… Read more

Toilet with a tablet: Tush-on with Kohler's Numi

While some technologies, such as smartphones and laptops, change by the month, others evolve at a far more glacial pace. Bathroom tech isn't an area where one expects great strides from year to year, but I couldn't ignore an invite to test Kohler's new Numi toilet. It's not every day I get asked to test-drive a commode.

The Numi is U.S. bathroom furnishing manufacturer Kohler's first big stride into a top-to-bottom high-tech toilet. While Kohler had previously introduced an attachable seat with several functions built in, the Numi is more of a complete toilet overhaul.

High-tech toilets are very popular overseas, particularly in Japan; in fact, I first used a high-tech toilet while on my honeymoon in Tokyo. Toilets with seat warmers and automatically adjusting bidets are strangely luxurious, but many times the toilets that employ them end up looking like astronaut equipment.

Comparatively, the Numi is shockingly minimal. At first glance it looks more like a piece of high-end kitchen equipment. Compact, squared-off, and glowing, it has barely any visible buttons at all on its smooth facade. Instead, the toilet's functions are controlled with a full-color touch-screen device that magnetically docks with a wall-mounted panel. … Read more

Man rescued after losing cell phone down toilet

Men make mistakes. Then they try to rectify them. Which might be mistake number two.

Who cannot sympathize with a man from the Jiangsu province in China whose cell phone sadly disappeared into the toilet?

ITN News doesn't record quite how the cell phone managed to disappear down where the blue goldfish swim, but what seems clear is that the man tried to reach down to retrieve his vital gadget.

Unfortunately, as this footage from China News makes clear, the man ended up flushed with embarrassment, as his arm became wedged in a place where it is unwise to … Read more

Europeans rally behind the 'NoMix-tech' toilet

The NoMix toilet, which rather appropriately collects urine in the front and feces in the back, has gained wide support by consumers throughout seven countries in Europe as a means of reducing pollution and conserving water, according to a new paper by scientists in Switzerland.

The just-publicized article, which calls on authorities to push for early adoption of the high-tech toilet, appears in the semi-monthly journal Environmental Science & Technology by ACS Publications.

Of the 2,700 people surveyed in Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Denmark, 80 percent say they support the idea behind the technology, and … Read more
