Find Web domain owners with WhoIs

WHOIS is a protocol that lets users query databases to find out the ownership information behind Web domains. WhoIs is a simple program that lets users perform this task, though we're not sure what the point of the program is when you can get the same information from any number of Web sites. If you do want a program dedicated to WHOIS queries, though, we suppose that WhoIs is a decent choice.

The program's interface is quite plain, and not entirely intuitive. A text box lets users enter the domain they want to search for, and we liked … Read more

How to adjust app and Web site permissions on Facebook

A lot of changes are rolling out on Facebook, and the Apps area didn't escape this remodel. Currently, an app only needs you to authorize permission once. After permission is given, it can post and share activity on Facebook on your behalf without approval. If you want to check up on what an app has access to, or are tired of sharing what game you're playing, here's how to adjust those settings:

Step 1: In Facebook, click the small arrow near your name in the upper-right-hand corner and choose Privacy Settings.

Step 2: Scroll down to Apps … Read more

How to check if Gmail, Hotmail, or Yahoo is down

When Web e-mail goes down, it seems to happen at the most inopportune times. We've all become so dependent on Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo Mail, and other Web e-mail services, that even a minute of down time can make us anxious. Is it really down, though? Here's how to check:

Gmail Google provides a comprehensive service status page that not only shows the status of Gmail, but other Google Apps services as well. To check Gmail's status, go to https://www.google.com/appsstatus.

Hotmail The Windows Live service status page shows the status of Hotmail, as well … Read more

Motorola could offer next Facebook phone

The folks who bring you the specifications for Bluetooth may have just outed the next Facebook phone. Now visible on the Web site for the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG), the Motorola EX225 doesn't look like much at first. Yet, if you peer closely at the handset's boring candy bar design, you'll see a dedicated Facebook button like we got on the HTC Status.

The Bluetooth SIG doesn't list any features save for a 3-megapixel camera, a full keyboard (of course), and the possibility of a dual SIM card slot. The tiny 2.4-inch screen would … Read more

Update Facebook status via e-mail

Many workplaces frown upon using company time for leisure activities such as browsing Facebook. This isn't without reason, however, as many people have gone on Facebook to post a status update and found themselves still on the site 45 minutes later instead of working. Fortunately, there is actually a way to update your status by simply sending an e-mail, escaping the grasp of the site during work hours.

Step 1: Sign into your account from the main Facebook page.

Step 2: Navigate to http://www.facebook.com/mobile in the same browser (not on … Read more

HTC Status is strictly for Facebook fans

We'll admit we snickered a little bit at the idea of a "Facebook phone." How hard is it to access Facebook on a phone these days? Just get the app and tap a few buttons, and you're all set. Do you really need a dedicated Facebook button?

But the HTC Status changed our minds, if only for a little while. Designed in collaboration with Facebook, the HTC Status was first introduced at Mobile World Congress in the form of the HTC ChaCha. It really is a wonderfully designed handset, with a white-and-silver unibody look that is … Read more
