Dish subscribers can now combine a bit of social networking with their TV viewing.

Available starting Wednesday, Social is the name of a new app for Dish's Hopper Whole-Home DVR that lets people watch a show and follow relevant posts or comment about it at the same time.

Digg's long-awaited Google Reader alternative finally has a name.

The new platform will be known as Digg Reader, said CEO Andrew McLaughlin while speaking at Internet Week New York earlier this week. Rather than act as a separate app, the program will be incorporated into Digg.

"Users will have one download, which is Digg, and the current Digg will have added onto it reader capabilities," McLaughlin said, according to The Next Web, which was in attendance at the event.

Eighteen months after a national launch, San Francisco-based startup Nextdoor is making its neighborhood-only social networks accessible from iPhone and giving people a quick-response way to spread urgent alerts or exchange messages with neighbors.
