SlingPlayer for PalmOS unveiled

The PalmOS version of the SlingPlayer Mobile software is now available as a public beta at Sling Media's Web site. The initial version of the Palm software is designed to run only on the Palm Treo 700p. The new software adds Palm to the list of supported platforms to which Slingbox products can stream home TV programming. To date, SlingPlayer viewing software has already been released for Windows (2000, XP, and Vista) and Mac OS X (Intel and PowerPC) computers and Windows Mobile handhelds and smartphones. Hands-on with the SlingCatcher

To date, the SlingPlayer viewing software has let owners of the Slingbox watch their home TV on a Windows PC, a Mac, or a Windows Mobile device anywhere in the world they have a broadband connection available. Symbian smartphone software is already available in Europe, and Palm software has just been announced. Those software players will soon be joined by a hardware option in the form of the recently announced SlingCatcher, due to hit stores in mid-2007 for under $200.

Cell phone 'Sling'-ing to be new British national pastime

Beginning Dec. 1, our friends across the Atlantic will be able to snag a cell phone pre-loaded with Sling Player Mobile.

The 3G mobile broadband company known as the 3 Group will be offering its new X-series of handsets with the software preinstalled needed to play content from a home television via a Slingbox, the two companies are expected to announce Thursday.

It's Sling Media's first partnership with a major mobile operator.

Trick or treat: SlingPlayer for Mac beta available

The Slingbox is no longer a Windows-only device. Today, Sling Media posted the beta version of the SlingPlayer software for Mac OS X. As to be expected with beta software, there are a few caveats: for now, the software is intended only for U.S. and Canadian Slingbox owners, and it will run only on Macs running OS X version 10.4. That said, we were able to download, install, and run it on an iMac in well under five minutes, and it performed smoothly during our first full day of testing.
