Selected Search speeds up on-page searching

Selected Search is a new add-on for Firefox that makes it easier to start a search from any page you're on. It works by taking text you've highlighted with your mouse, and then bringing up a small pop-up list of all the search engines you have installed. From there you just pick the one you want and it opens up behind the scenes in a new tab.

Firefox has its own built-in contextual shortcut that does this with whatever search engine you've got set up as the primary. The big difference with this extension is that you … Read more

Easy cropping tool

While there are more expensive programs that let you do more with your digital images, Photo Crop Editor lowers the cost and focuses exclusively on cropping.

This is about as simple as a program can be when dealing with photo editing. The generous screen is dominated by the open space for your photos. At the top is a surprisingly short list of commands. Users are given opportunities to select a photo, quick crop, manually crop, select a background, save, and print. Below this are smaller icons dedicated to rotating the picture and zooming.

Most inexperienced photo croppers will want to … Read more

Want to compete in the TDI Cup driver selection? Game on.

First things first: racing cars of any sort is an expensive, time-consuming sport. Many drivers begin their training when they outgrow their Big Wheels (although a previous CNET post shows that size doesn't matter when it comes to Big Wheel racing), but just because you weren't born into a racing family or started karting when you were 6 doesn't mean it's too late to become a professional race car driver.

Volkswagen has teamed up with iRacing.com Motorsport Simulations to develop an online racing simulator video game of its SCCA Pro Racing Jetta TDI Cup series. … Read more

Search and send with a click

Cleeki's Select-n-Go add-on for Firefox is one of many extensions that attempts to solve the problem of looking up information engendered from the content of a Web page, without leaving your current tab. Highlight a word on a Web page to see a tiny blue button pop out below (if the word is on Wikipedia, you'll see a small Wikipedia logo float above.) Click the blue button to open a menu stuffed with more icons that will initiate a search for the word when you click them--including Wikipedia, Google, Yahoo, The Free Dictionary, and Amazon. Not only do … Read more

Light and easy

To put it gently, Adobe Reader is a real pain in the hindquarters. It's monstrously large, slow to load, and includes many features most users will hardly ever need. Foxit PDF Reader 3.0 kills the bloat and throws in some useful features, such as multimedia support and content-sharing options, while still allowing you to quickly access your PDFs.

The interface mimics Adobe's, so you won't have to change your reading habits. In our test, the text readability was similar. The small program starts surprisingly fast compared with Adobe. You might need to fiddle a bit to … Read more

Use your keyboard to select text in Microsoft Word

Dragging a mouse to select text in Microsoft Word requires the precision of a diamond cutter, or seems to, anyway. I prefer to press the Ctrl, Shift, and arrow keys to make my text selections. Throw in a couple of function keys, and I can use my keyboard to select text faster than any mouser can.

To select a word at a time, press Ctrl-Shift and the left or right arrow key. Ctrl-Shift and the up and down arrow keys select a paragraph at a time. If you get tired of holding down the Shift key, simply press F8 to … Read more
