Verizon vows to correct Galaxy Nexus signal problems

If you're one of the new owners of a Samsung Galaxy Nexus who's experiencing wobbly signal strength on Verizon, a reprieve is on the way.

This article was originally published December 19, 2011, and updated on December 21, 2011.

The carrier, in a tweet, promised phone owner Jack Doyle that Verizon is looking into and actively developing a fix for issues with signal inconsistencies that are keeping his phone--and others--from performing as promised.

Verizon told Computer World that the software upgrade is no more than a change to the signal strength indicator, the icon displaying the number of &… Read more

Get Google Wallet on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus without rooting

We have already told you about Samsung Galaxy Nexus users getting Google Wallet running on their beloved device, despite Verizon's wishes.

The previous methods to getting Google Wallet installed on a Galaxy Nexus were a bit complicated for the average user. The method required unlocking the bootloader, rooting, and then flashing some files onto the Galaxy Nexus before Google Wallet would work.

Thankfully, a much easier solution has surfaced.… Read more

Google Wallet seen running on Verizon Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Well, well, looks like if you really want Google Wallet on your shiny new Verizon Galaxy Nexus it's yours for the taking. This is despite Verizon and the Isis group from saying you can't.

Images posted by tech site BGR allegedly show the Google Wallet software up and running on Samsung's latest superphone. If you recall, rumor has it that the Galaxy Nexus was actually delayed because of a spat between Google and Isis, a consortium of three major U.S. carriers (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile). Google wanted its mobile Wallet software to live on the … Read more

Google rolls out flashy Galaxy Nexus ads

Timed with the Samsung Galaxy Nexus coming to Verizon, Google has just published two new ads touting a few of Android Ice Cream Sandwich's slick features.

Both of the spots have been pushed out via YouTube, one cleverly showcasing Hangouts and the other ICE's facial security.

The most imaginative video highlights how Hangouts enables live video chat with up to 10 people at once using the Galaxy Nexus' front-facing camera. A gathering of "bohemians" sings along to Queen's classic ballad "Bohemian Rhapsody":

The other ad centers around a child's vain attempts to … Read more

It's only hours before the Samsung Galaxy Nexus finally goes on sale tomorrow for $299.99, but we already managed to get our hands on the 4G LTE handset, the first to rock the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system.

The verdict? Well, you'll have to read our full review to get that, but let's just say that this puppy's super-speedy LTE and a slim, steady piece of hardware got our attention--not to mention that it stirs things up with the best Android OS available to date. (OK, I'll give you another hint, … Read more

Living with the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, three weeks later

The U.S. launch of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus may have smacked face-first into a wall of delays, but that hasn't stopped me from spending the last three weeks smearing my thumbprints all over the unlocked version of the first phone to get Google's red-hot Android Ice Cream Sandwich operating system.

Now, between the phone and the Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) operating system, there's a lot of minutiae, more than most people will really want to read regarding the scads of cosmetic and substantive changes to each function or app. As a result, I'm aiming for the broad view. In the three weeks since I got the phone, I've answered many of your ICS and Galaxy Nexus questions, tested the camera, stumbled onto a lot of hidden features, and explored Android Beam using another Galaxy Nexus phone (more on this below).

Using ICS on the Galaxy Nexus has been a positive experience, and as with many phones, the Galaxy Nexus grew on me even more. It has an open design and appealing shape, a comfortable "hyperskin" soft-touch back cover, and a great screen. ICS adds snappy graphics and a laundry list of new features.… Read more

Galaxy Nexus teardown reveals plenty of goodies

The team at iFixit has been busy tearing down the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Nexus to see how much silicon sweetness is in the center of this first Android Ice Cream Sandwich phone. They found plenty, and lots of it is from Texas.

Texas Instruments had already confirmed that the Galaxy Nexus was carrying its OMAP 4460 1.2GHz dual-core processor, and iFixit's teardown reveals other TI components handling some audio and power management. Bosch, Melfas, Intel, and of course Samsung are among the other manufacturers whose chips make an appearance in the preliminary teardown.

Among some of the unique … Read more

Samsung Galaxy Nexus cam vs. iPhone 4S vs. HTC Vivid vs. Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket

Smartphones with great cameras are mushrooming up all over the market, delighting phone owners everywhere. Who doesn't want a fantastic smartphone camera that could replace a point-and-shoot? Easier said than done. Megapixel math is incomplete if you're not accounting for variables like light sensors, auto-focus, flash, and the camera's own rendering software.

Plus, photos are more likely to look terrific on a smaller smartphone display than on a larger laptop or TV screen. That's why we periodically grab up the best camera phones we have on us at the time and shoot a couple of indoor … Read more

Galaxy Nexus reportedly suffers from volume glitch

If you've been eagerly awaiting the launch of the Galaxy Nexus smartphone, you may want to take a rain check for now.

Over at the XDA Developers forums, users have reported that the Samsung handset running Android Ice Cream Sandwich suffers from a hardware bug that forces the phone to automatically change the volume.

The problem has been documented when the Galaxy Nexus is placed close to another phone that's making a call on the 900MHz GSM band. Apparently the Galaxy Nexus has inadequate shielding, and the interference is causing the handset to rapidly trigger the volume down button.

While there are temporary solutions (like forcing the smartphone to run only in 3G), it may not always be convenient, especially if you're in an area where 3G coverage is spotty. This also happens on the bootloader level, as shown by the video below. … Read more
