Koenigsegg set to buy Saab

STOCKHOLM -- General Motors on June 12 was close to selling its loss-making Saab unit after tiny Koenigsegg agreed to ride to the rescue of its fellow Swedish carmaker, a source familiar with the talks told Reuters. A deal would put a company that has fewer than 50 employees and turns out only a handful of $1 million supercars in charge of Saab, which produces that many family cars every hour.

Saab 9-3x to be revealed at Geneva Motor Show--will it also be a flex-fuel?

Saab will debut the 2010 Saab 9-3x, a more rugged-looking wagon for buyers who are honest enough to admit that they really don't need the off-roading capabilities of an SUV, want more driving comfort than a crossover, yet still desire all-wheel drive and bit more ground clearance.

The 9-3x is equipped with a 2.0 turbocharged 4-cylinder engine producing 210 horsepower that is paired with either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.

What happens when you let Scandinavians design a convertible? Well, for one, you end up with the very successful Saab 900 convertible, which launched in 1985. Saab has taken another shot at it with the 9-X Air, a concept vehicle unveiled at the 2008 Paris Motor Show that uses a unique convertible soft top, plus quite a few other good concept car touches.

This car is not as boring as it looks.As we have written about at length, ethanol fuel is gaining momentum as a possible alternative to gas.

The Saab BioPower E100 concept vehicle, which is at the New York Auto Show, runs on E100 (100 percent bioethanol fuel). The BioPower E100 would be a turbocharged 2.0 liter engine that offers 300 horsepower and runs on bioethanal.

While the BioPower E100, which debuted at the Geneva Auto Show, is only a concept, Saab does sell the Saab 9-5 BioPower, which runs on E85.
