Digg redo means more photos, Facebook and Twitter integration

News aggregator Digg is getting a makeover that does away with the headlines list, adds photos, and integrates Facebook and Twitter into its Digg score. But it won't offer commenting -- yet.

The site's new team is hoping to bring back some of that Digg commenting magic at later date, Digg posted on its blog Rethinkdigg today. The new site is expected to launch later this week.

"When Digg was founded in 2004, it was one of the only places on the Web to have a conversation with like-minded people. Today, conversations happen everywhere, and the problem … Read more

Google redesigns the display of its search results page

If you searched for something on Google today, you may have noticed something different, such as a new drop-down menu of search tools. This is the latest in Google's changes to how query results are displayed and how its search engine works.

Google's redesign was first noticed by TechCrunch, which noted that the major difference is the results are now vertical. Rather than having the search tools taking up space on a sidebar, they are now located directly under the search field.

The search engine has already started showing an automatic text box in the right side bar … Read more

LinkedIn spreads redesign effort to home page

LinkedIn continues to revamp its image with plans to roll out a new home-page design, the site revealed in a blog post today.

The new home page will feature more emphasis on shared news articles and posts, with what looks like enlarged photos and a more prominent display of comments, judging by the image in the blog post.

The post touts a "simpler and more modern design," with "more relevant updates" prominently showcased and a "cleaner, richer update stream."

The changes may make the site look more and more like a grown-up version of … Read more

LinkedIn continues news page revamp

As a part of its ongoing redesign, LinkedIn rolled out its more features on its LinkedIn Today tab today, in hopes that it will provide an even more tailored news experience for its users.

The changes include the ability to directly comment and like the articles in your network within the tab, which was designed to display news articles that are relevant to you and your network.

"These two new features, together with the existing customizable news feed, allow members to not only narrow down the most timely and relevant information needed when needed, but to also gather valuable … Read more

Facebook highlights weddings with new feature

Sometimes it can be easy to miss a friend's engagement or wedding announcement on Facebook's News Feed. So the social network has decided to do something about this.

Facebook announced today a new feature called "Weddings and Celebrations." Similar to the birthday feature, the weddings and celebrations feature shows friends' status on the top right-hand side of the page once they change it to "married" or "engaged."

Here's what a Facebook spokesperson told CNET in an e-mail:

Facebook has become a unique way people share and congratulate friends around exciting life … Read more

PayPal told TechCrunch that the company will announce more details on the redesign tomorrow. For now, it's … Read more

Facebook test hints at another profile redesign

Facebook may be changing how your profile looks -- again.

The company confirmed today that it is conducting a test of the new Timeline layout, which moves some information and links into the panoramic photo that now stretches across the tops of user profiles.

"We can confirm this is a small test, but don't have anything further to share at this time," a spokesperson said in a statement the company e-mailed to me.

This could mean another redesign is on its way.

Carl Franzen of Talking Points Memo noticed the subtle differences of a new Timeline design. … Read more

Flickr upgrades core experience with bigger photos

It's been nibbling around the edges, but Flickr plans to improve a central part of the photo-sharing site today by showing photos larger -- potentially a lot larger.

Using what it calls a "liquid layout" that adapts to the size of the browser window, the Yahoo site will show high-resolution images as large as possible on its main photo pages. The traditional accompanying information will show alongside -- maps, thumbnails of other photos in the photostream, camera information, and the like.

Here's a before-and-after comparison for a person using a larger monitor.

Flickr launched with photos … Read more

Is this the new iPhone home button?

Last fall the Internet was abuzz about Apple's apparent iPhone redesign for what eventually became the iPhone 4S. Much to the dismay of the media and some louder consumers, the iPhone 4S retained the same design profile as the previous-generation iPhone 4.

At the time, the redesign was expected to feature a teardrop back casing, a bigger screen and, among other things, an ovular home button. If the shape of the home button is any indication of a complete redesign, the latest part leak from Chinese supplier TVC-Mall.com (via Apple Bitch) may not win over many of the … Read more

The 404 1,038: Where you're going to want to sit down for this (podcast)

Crusty Craigslist may finally be getting an update based on this job listing for a senior user-interface engineer, so Jeff and I are brainstorming the features we think Craig should incorporate in CL2.0.

Jeff likes to indulge in the art of self-reflection, and a friendly chat about Blu-ray discs this weekend inspires him to question the value of physical discs and their jewel cases. On that note, what is the best way to display a collection? Is it on...what are they called again? Oh yeah, towers? A discussion on subtle self-promotion follows.… Read more
