Et tu, Redbox? Coinstar, owner of the Redbox service, is raising DVD rental fees by 20 percent, due to an increase in operating expenses. Let's see if this stirs a Netflix-like outcry.

Netflix's decision over the summer to increase prices for those who had both streaming and DVD-rental plans was met with intense anger from subscribers. Those customers, who were previously paying $9.99 per month for DVD rentals and streaming, are now forced to pay $15.98 per month for the same level of service.

Redbox hits 1.5 billion DVD, Blu-ray rentals

Redbox is seeing strong demand for its disc rentals, the company announced yesterday.

According to the rental firm, which is owned by Coinstar, 1.5 billion DVDs and Blu-ray discs have been rented from its kiosks since it launched its service in 2004. Moreover, the company has rented 4 million video games.

To help build upon that success, Redbox said yesterday that it's rolling out game rentals to 5,000 more kiosks around the U.S. starting August 1. With those additions, consumers will be able to find games at 27,000 kiosks around the country, Redbox said.

Redbox presses play on game rentals nationwide

As promised, Redbox has rolled out game rentals nationwide.

In April, Redbox said it would start offering game rentals in 21,000 of its 27,000 kiosks this month. The company is renting out a range of titles for the Xbox 360, Wii, and PlayStation 3, including the recently launched Duke Nukem Forever and last year's blockbuster hit Call of Duty: Black Ops.

Redbox has launched a full online listing of games available to customers. Those who find something they like can reserve a title from home and pick it up at their chosen Redbox location.

Redbox readies $2 game rentals

Redbox plans to start renting out games at the vast majority of its U.S. locations later this year.

Starting in June, 21,000 Redbox locations will feature Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Nintendo Wii titles, the company said yesterday. The games will be available for $2 per day and feature everything from "top releases to popular family and kids titles."

Redbox currently operates 27,000 kiosks around the U.S. It offers DVD and Blu-ray rentals for $1 per day and $1.50 per day, respectively.

Netflix posts 'buy' button but not doing the selling

A month after Hollywood studio executives said that Netflix had declined to post "Buy" buttons on its site, the video-rental service has done just that.

Obscurely posted on the Netflix page advertising the Robert De Niro film "Little Fockers" is a hyperlink that reads "Buy now." Clicking it takes you to Littlefockers.net, the official Web site for the film. The blog Hackingnetflix.com first reported on the button.

Report: Redbox ready to battle Netflix streaming

The streaming market is about to get a bit more crowded, according to a new report.

Redbox President Mitch Lowe confirmed to a group of analysts yesterday that his company is planning to launch a streaming service to compete with Netflix, the Los Angeles Times is reporting. Similar to Netflix, Redbox's streaming service will be subscription-based, requiring customers to pay a single monthly fee for access to its slate of films.

Redbox launches Android app, updates iPhone app

Movie rental company Redbox is trying to improve its standing in the mobile market.

The company announced today that it has launched a new Android application that will allow its customers to look through available titles, find one of its kiosks around the U.S., and reserve films from the app. In addition, it updated its iPhone app to make the software more responsive to users when they rent movies.
