Razer loses Blade gaming laptop prototypes in Nov. 4 break-in

High-end gaming-peripheral-maker Razer sends word of an office break-in that occurred the weekend of November 4.

Gone missing: two prototypes of its Razer Blade high-end gaming laptops.

The following came from Razer's PR representative:

Over the weekend of 11/4/11, we had a break-in at one of our Razer offices. Two Razer Blade prototypes were stolen from our Bay Area R&D lab.

As you can imagine, the return of these prototype units is very important to the company. We have already reported this to the authorities who are working closely with us on this matter.… Read more

Razer sends PC peripheral settings to the cloud

If you only use one computer for PC gaming, you won't care too much about Razer's new cloud-based game device settings service, Synapse 2.0. For those who bounce around PCs, LAN center customers, tournament gamers, or even those who use both a desktop and a laptop for gaming, Razer's new service could make your life easier.… Read more

Razer's Blade game laptop not the mini Switchblade we've been waiting for

Following its "PC gaming is not dead" ad campaign, Razer has officially unveiled its first foray into system-building. The new product, teased in a full-page ad Razer ran in the Wall Street Journal on August 22, is the Razer Blade, which the company describes as a "full aluminum chassis gaming laptop featuring true portability, incredible performance, and an all-new revolutionary user interface."

This is surprising in a way, not because a mouse-and-keyboard maker is getting into the business of making and selling laptops, but because we were hoping the mystery product was the pocket-size Switchblade, a curious handheld prototype we saw and played with at CES 2011.

Instead, this is a 17-inch gaming laptop, although Razer claims it will be only 0.88 inch thick and weigh under 7 pounds, which is impressive if you've seen any of our recent monster gaming laptop reviews. The unique part is the right side of the keyboard, where you would normally expect to find a number pad.… Read more

Razer says 'PC gaming not dead' ahead of Aug. 26 reveal

We don't know what Razer is hinting at with its "PC gaming is not dead" teaser campaign, but whatever it is, we find out on August 26. You can scan the official promo site, complete with countdown timer, here. You may also have seen the full page ad it ran in the Wall Street Journal this morning.

If we had to guess what Razer might be revealing this Friday, the Switchblade gaming Netbook comes to mind. Demonstrated at this year's CES in prototype form, the Switchblade featured a 7-inch display and programmable LCD-based buttons for customizing … Read more

Razer game peripherals get Transformers treatment

Seems like Razer's making even more branded peripherals. This time, the company's DeathAdder mice, Vespula mats, and laptop sleeves are getting a Transformers 3 makeover.

Each DeathAdder mouse and sleeve will be colored differently, based on a specific robot (four versions in total). The mouse mats, on the other hand, will only feature the leaders from the Autobots and the Decepticons. Sadly, none of these can transform and do anything more.

Both the Transformers-themed DeathAdders mice and Vespula mats are already retailing at $69.99 and $44.99 respectively. The laptop sleeves will be available for purchase at a later date.

On a side note, it'll be interesting to see if we get Winnie the Pooh merchandise from Razer once that movie comes out later this year.

Razer adding dual-sensor technology to high-end gaming mice

We've seen mouse sensors based on one laser, two lasers, BlueTracks, and Darkfields. What about a mouse with both a laser and an optical sensor, you ask? Enter Razer's newly announced 4G Dual Sensor System.

According to the Razer press release, the 4G Dual Sensor System "lets you determine the cutoff height for tracking to stop when the mouse is lifted from the surface. This is especially important for gamers who pick up their mice to accommodate wide swiping motions." In addition to height detection, Razer also attributes to its sensor design a new 6,400dpi … Read more

Razer's Ferox gaming speakers pack a punch

We're no strangers to portable speakers, having seen a few X-mini capsule boomboxes pass through our Labs, but with claims like "360-degree omni-directional sound," "stronger bass," and "optimized digital amplifiers," it's hard not to notice the Razer Ferox.

Expected to be available later this month for $60, the Ferox powers up when you hit its flat top, which rises to reveal the resonance chambers. The built-in rechargeable (via USB) batteries are rated for 12 hours of playback and you get a convenient carrying case to ferry the Ferox to your parties. Of course, the speakers with 30mm drivers are compatible with almost anything that has a 3.5mm audio jack. A couple more pictures of the Ferox below. … Read more

Laptop talk show: Watch us go hands on with the best CES laptops

We tried something a little different at CES 2011. Instead of shooting individual hands-on videos with a bunch of different laptops, we instead invited the most promising systems (including some experimental prototypes) all up to the CNET stage at once, where Molly Wood and I hosted what might be the world's first live laptop talk show.

Highlights included the under-development Razer Switchblade gaming laptop and Toshiba's prototype 3D eyeglass-free laptop, along with Samsung's slim and sexy 9 Series and Lenovo's back-from-the-dead IdeaPad U1 tablet/notebook hybrid. Watch the show to see us give each one a … Read more

Gaming wrap-up

Another CES in the books means it's time to take a look at the past few days and highlight what we thought were the most exciting moments of the show. To the right are some video First Looks in gaming from CES 2011.
