Video game sales slip 16 percent

The video game industry had a mixed March as hardware sales were up thanks in part to the popularity of the Nintendo DS, but software sales took a steep dive, according to the latest data from NPD.

For the month, game console sales rose to $494.5 million, a gain of 12 percent from $440.6 million in the year-ago period. Sales of video game accessories also showed strong growth, rising 13 percent to $241.3 million from $214.3 million a year ago. Another day, another PSP price cut--in Europe

Sony has cut the price of its PlayStation Portable in Europe, the company announced today.

Starting today, European customers who opt for a PSP will find it available for 129.99 euros, down from 169.99 euros. Sony was also quick to point out that some of its "top titles" are available to customers in Europe for as little as 9.99 euros. Its "platinum" catalog of titles, including God of War: Ghost of Sparta, retails for 19.99 euros.

Sony brings Music Unlimited to PSP

Sony's Music Unlimited service is coming to the PlayStation Portable.

Starting on Thursday, PSP owners with PlayStation Network IDs will be able to access Music Unlimited from their portable gaming devices. When people load up the app, they will be able to access millions of tracks on the streaming service from a range of major and independent labels.

Report: Sony PSP, NGP to get Music Unlimited

Sony plans to expand its Music Unlimited streaming service to more of its gaming hardware, the company reportedly told Eurogamer in an interview published yesterday.

Speaking to the gaming publication, Shawn Layden, executive vice president and CEO of Sony Network Entertainment, said that Music Unlimited would be made available on the PlayStation Portable "in a matter of weeks." He then turned his attention to Sony's upcoming gaming device, codenamed the Next Generation Portable (NGP), which the company plans to release at the end of 2011.

Portable gaming on a budget

Now that both Nintendo and Sony have shown their respective upcoming portable gaming hands, each company's current-generation systems are more affordable than ever.

For the gamer on the go who might not care about the absolute latest and greatest, there are plenty of deals to be had on some very successful pieces of hardware and software.

Sony NGP lands in ancient coliseum

Sony's NGP console might not be out until near Christmas, but we're already rather excited. It packs some monster hardware, including two--count 'em--two analog sticks and an intriguing touch-sensitive pad on the back.

But it's enormous! Measuring in at 182 by 84 by 19mm, it really stretches the definition of "handheld." We were so blown away by those dimensions, we decided to enlist the help of our loyal cohort of Facebook followers to illustrate the NGP's gargantuan girth.

Sony dropping PSP price to $129

Sony has substantially cut the price of its PlayStation Portable.

Starting Sunday, consumers can get their hands on the portable-gaming device for $129.99--the same price as the Nintendo DS Lite. The PSP currently sells for $169.99.

In addition, Sony has added 13 titles, including Assassin's Creed Bloodlines and Dissidia Final Fantasy, to its "Greatest Hits" and "Favorites" lines of games. Titles in the Greatest Hits list will retail for $19.99, while titles in the Favorites line will go for $9.99.
