Apple's A6X processor, which is found in the company's fourth-generation iPad, might soon see its producer switched from Samsung to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company.

Intel CEO Paul Otellini is leaving his post in May. When that happens, don't expect some grubby outsider CEO to get his or her hands on the controls.

Speaking yesterday at the Sanford C. Bernstein Conference, Otellini acknowledged that he won't be able to decide who succeeds him, but said there's an overwhelmingly strong chance that the next Intel CEO already works there.

Qualcomm has added two new chipsets to its popular Snapdragon S4 processor family.

Dubbed the MSM8226 and MSM8626, the chipsets offer quad-core processing and use the 28nm technology node. The chipsets include the Adreno 305 graphics processing unit, allowing for 1080p video capture and playback and up to a 13-megapixel camera. According to Qualcomm, the chipsets will allow for long battery life, though the company didn't put a number on that.

Joining the battle to control as much of the production process as possible, LG has reportedly begun designing its own processors.

The South Korean electronics maker plans to unveil in-house designed mobile processors at the Consumer Electronics Show next month, according to the Korea Times. The company reportedly has more than 900 chip designers working on chips to be used in smartphones and Web-connected televisions.

Texas Instruments is officially getting out of the consumer smartphone business, as major phone suppliers like Apple turn to internal chip designs.

"TI...will reduce costs and focus investments in its wireless business on embedded markets with greater potential for sustainable growth. Cost reductions include the elimination of about 1,700 jobs worldwide," TI said in a statement today.

While TI didn't mention any names, one of the most telling statements alluded to companies that are now designing their own chips. That would include Apple, which designs processors for its iPhone.

Texas Instruments and Amazon are currently engaged in "advanced talks" over the possibility of the Kindle maker acquiring Texas Instruments' mobile chip business, Israel-based news outlet Calcalist is reporting today (translate), citing sources.
