Odds and Ends: Advertisements in paid iTunes content; Apple Knowledge Base updates

Advertisements in paid iTunes content It appears that Apple is now allowing advertisements in paid content from the iTunes Store. Though there has never been a specific policy against such ads, the precedent thus far has been commercial-free.

MacFixIt reader Kevin writes:

"Just thought you should know iTunes is now allowing commercials in paid TV shows. I bought a pass for MLB Daily Rewind, and to my surprise, there are about 5 minutes of commercials as part of every show. This is a $2 per episode show. I am disappointed in Apple for starting this practice. [...] I am fine … Read more

Odds and Ends: Creating a new file directly from the Finder; Sleep issues with SMC Fan Control; Apple Knowledge Base updates

Creating a new file directly from the Finder MonkeyBites tackles one of the more frustrating issues for Windows users switching to the Mac: creating new files directly on the Desktop or elsewhere in the file navigation interface (Finder).

"Just in the last two days I've run across no less than four ways to create new files directly in the Finder. The first is an application called Document Palette. Document Palette runs in the background and allows you to create new documents in the current folder. With a folder active in Finder, press Control Option Command N to make … Read more

Odds and Ends: Quicken .Mac backup heavily taxing system resources; Knowledge Base updates

Quicken .Mac backup heavily taxing system resources We've received scattered reports of an issue where Quicken 2007 generates excessive processor usage when attempting to backup data .Mac.

One user experiencing this issue writes:

"I've noticed that when quitting Quicken 2007 when the backup to .mac occurs, the fan on my MacBook Core Duo revs up to full speed during the backup.... Not sure what has been coded into Quicken that would cause this behavior. The same thing happens on a MacBook Core 2 Duo, so it isn't an anomaly of just one machine."

Problems with DVI-to-DVI output for MacBook (13") MacFixIt reader Krzysztof Maj reports an issue where his MacBook (13") fails to generate proper display output when connected via a straight DVI connection. Oddly, the system does generate proper output when connected via DVI-to-VGA setup.

Krzyztof writes:

"This is a strange thing, because when I connect my Macbook to that monitor via VGA (mini DVI to VGA adapter and regular VGA cable) I can reach maximum 1440x900 fine. But when I use DVI in the same way I used to with the VGA adapter, the only maximum resolution is … Read more
