Cars that rock, and roll

These five cars have the best-sounding stereos we've tested all year.

To get good sound in a car, you used to have to visit an installer, who would rip out four tinny speakers and replace them with six-by-nines, a sub, and an amp. But now many automakers are partnering with known audio companies to put high-quality audio components in cars at the factory. These systems are designed specifically for each car by professional audio engineers. We picked out five cars with the best-sounding audio systems we heard this year. These systems produce the kind of sound that will have you driving around the block until your favorite song finishes playing.… Read more

2011 Frankfurt auto show: 2013 Hyundai i30

Hyundai is clearly done being that car you don't know the name of.

For a long time, Hyundai cars were sort of bland, and when you did get close enough to read the name, you then recoiled at its reputation. This new i30 is a stylish crossover that shows the Korean car maker is not only interested in competing but also stomping out the embers of its ugly past.

2012 Hyundai Azera: The sincerest form of flattery

LOS ANGELES--If you've ever criticized Hyundai for derivative design, you'll want to have your torches and pitchforks at the ready for this one.

The first thing I thought when Hyundai pulled the wraps off of its new 2012 Azera here at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show was that it looked just like a Toyota Camry. Perhaps that's not totally fair, because as the large sedan spun slowly on its turntable, I also saw hints of Mazda6, Nissan Altima, and BMW 6-Series. For a brand like Hyundai that's been building a ton of steam over the … Read more

2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe goes for the full monty on Facebook

Just days after Hyundai gave us our first official teaser for the redesigned Genesis Coupe, the automaker goes and gives us the full monty on its worldwide Facebook page.

The wider shots give us a full view of the new, Veloster-fied front end. This is also the clearest looks yet at the hood sculpting and vents. It's difficult to tell whether those vents are functional, but I wouldn't be surprised if there were more form than function to be found there. We can also get an idea of how the new front end will work with the rest … Read more

Official Hyundai blog shows off 2013 Genesis Coupe

Depending on your opinion of Hyundai's Fluidic Sculpture design language, the 2013 Genesis Coupe is either about to get a lot better-looking or much worse.

On the automaker's Korean-language blog, the clearest shots yet of the next iteration of the sportiest Hyundai can be found. The frontal shot clearly shows off the new, more Veloster-like front end that we got a blurry look at some time ago. LED fog lamps are also visible in the shot beneath the ornate headlamps.

A rear shot showcases a new spoiler, new organically styled taillamps, and what looks like sensors for a … Read more

Hyundai remixes the Veloster, Genesis Coupe at SEMA 2011

LAS VEGAS--Hyundai's last few appearances at the SEMA Show have been so Genesis-heavy that I had to double-check I hadn't stumbled into Sega's booth.

Although the Genesis Coupe is still a large part of Hyundai's aftermarket strategy for the 2011 SEMA Show, the automaker's focus has been shifted to its new weapon of choice: the brand-new 2012 Veloster. Hyundai's booth was home to the unveiling of five custom Veloster models, including the ARK Performance Veloster that we saw previewed not too long ago.

The ARK Veloster features a laundry list of modifications that touch … Read more

Five tech cars for under $20,000

The lowest-price cars used to be devoid of features other than maybe a rearview mirror and heating vents.

You can still find those very base-level cars, but go up a trim level and you get much, much more. Automakers have unleashed a new set of subcompacts focused on the entry-level buyer, and this young demographic has certain expectations about technology.

Most of the cars we included in this roundup come in between $15,000 and $20,000, optioned up and out the door. Navigation is not prevalent among these cars, but most buyers in this segment will rely on a smartphone. … Read more

ARK, Hyundai team up to make the Veloster even more mad (SEMA 2011)

The 2011 SEMA Show--the hottest, largest aftermarket automotive show in the world--is but one short month away and with its approach comes a deluge of hot custom cars and aftermarket accessories that will be vying for our attention from the show floor. The first to catch our attention is this hopped-up Hyundai Veloster customized by ARK Performance.

ARK starts with the Veloster's 1.6-liter GDI engine and sporty, but economical, suspension setup but eventually upgrades darn near everything with a jaw-dropping list of performance parts. Power upgrades start with an ARK turbocharger and front-mount intercooler and terminate with a … Read more
