The 404 221: Where Randall Bennett makes his holographic debut

OMG, WTF, LMAO, and a million other Internet expletives for our new leader, Mr. Barack Obama. Even Jeff, The Lone Hater, can't seem to contain his excitement over the election results. Former 404 host Randall Bennett also joins us via completely useless hologram to share in the excitement and recap the events. Hats off to you, Mr. President. Please give us a call if you're ever in the Gramercy, N.Y. area, we'll see if we can pencil you into the show.

Even though all of us are out of breath and stricken with sore throats from a night of "Whoos!" and "F**K You Tennessee," we still manage to drag ourselves into the studio this morning to celebrate our country's triumphant return to common sense. It's like waking up from an awful nightmare that somehow managed to last eight grueling years. Our special guest on the show today is Randall Bennett, former host of The 404, who helps us weigh on the presidential election, the cheerful optimism resonating from the streets of New York, Twitter's flawless victory in the face of 13562834791 simultaneous tweets, and perhaps most hilarious--the AMAZING CNN HOLOGRAMS! Because when you've got money coming out of your ears and split screens just aren't enough, count on CNN to be the face of American frivolity. USA! USA! USA!

Beam me up, Telstra

Star Trek lovers drooled earlier this week when Telstra, the Australian phone company, used a hologram to beam its chief technology officer from Melbourne to a business meeting about 460 miles away in Adelaide.

Hugh Bradlow, Telstra's CTO, was filmed in Melbourne by a high-definition video camera. The video was then sent in real time across Telstra's high-speed network to an optical projector in Adelaide where the 3D life-size image appeared and interacted with the audience.

A camera was also set up at the event in Adelaide, so that Bradlow could know who he was talking to and … Read more

Touch screens you don't need to touch

Another week, another cool touch screen video that everyone's e-mailing around the office.

The latest most-forwarded is the CeBIT demo video below, which is a collaborative effort between TouchKo, White Electronics Designs, and Groupe 3D. A cross between a monitor and a Wii controller (without the actual controller), the "touchless touch screen" responds to hand movements directly in front of it; you don't even have to come into contact with the screen.

Looks pretty neat, but also kind of exhausting. Although we haven't seen one available in stores yet, the concept of a "touchless … Read more

3D holograms made easy

Now this is something with potential for some fun. The "Mirage 3D Hologram Generator" is a precision optical instrument that claims to generate a perfect image and, as Newlaunches says, you don't need a Ph.D to work it. All you need to do is place an object in the small bowl, and what appears to be a detailed replica will hover over it.

We're a bit wary of passing along anything sold through a site with a name like "Eyetricks.com," but it insists that the $36 device has been used in schools … Read more
