Ban on press at Gore's CTIA keynote lifted

Former Vice President Al Gore will allow the press to cover his keynote at the CTIA conference in April, after initially banning coverage of his speech.

The CTIA announced Monday that Gore agreed to let the press into his April 3 keynote "due to a high degree of interest." Gore's talk, which is expected to focus on his work as an environmental activist rather than his role overseeing a mobile computing company as a director at Apple, was initially closed to the press but open to regular CTIA attendees.

Gore had a similar policy in place at … Read more

Al Gore backs environmental top-level domain

As the organization responsible for overseeing Internet domains prepares to expand the number of top-level domains available, Al Gore is advocating for a special domain to promote environmental awareness.

Two Internet entrepreneurs have formed Dot Eco LLC for the purpose of securing the .eco domain through the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers' new gTLD application process.

The group announced Thursday at ICANN's Mexico City meeting that it has entered into an "integrated partnership" with Gore and his philanthropic organization, the Alliance for Climate Protection.

TED conference: Gates, Gore, robot wars

Bill Gates released mosquitoes into the audience, Naturally 7 recreated the sound of musical instruments with their voices, and Al Gore admonished the coal industry for its "clean" image campaign.

All in all, it was just another day at the Technology, Entertainment, Design (TED) Conference, a premiere and exclusive gathering of visionaries and luminaries that is taking place this week in Long Beach, Calif.

Wednesday started on a sobering note with Juan Enriquez, a philosopher and researcher, who explored how the U.S. economy is floundering but encouraged people to "dance through the flames" and focus … Read more

Why the ocean matters...to Google

SAN FRANCISCO--The fact that you now can explore the ocean through Google Earth isn't going to make Google much money directly. But the move is nonetheless smart.

Google generated early-stage goodwill from being the best answer to the online search problem. But the company is large and getting larger, especially as it shows a better ability to withstand the recession than rivals, and that goodwill won't last forever.

Google Earth, though, gives the company a new way to bring its brand to the world, notably with students for whom the software will help supplant atlases and encyclopedias. And … Read more

Current Media: Nope, we're not closing an office

A rumor floated on the Twitter account known as The Media Is Dying--which, for obvious reasons, has been fairly active as of late--indicated on Wednesday morning that Current Media, the cable and Web media company co-founded by former Vice President Al Gore, is closing its San Francisco office. The Twitter account, which has broken a handful of accurate layoff and shutdown stories as of late, claimed that it had "confirmed" the office closing.

But Current was quick to deny the rumor. Not that we have to remind you, but don't believe everything you read on Twitter.… Read more

Al Gore details five-step plan to clean electricity

As speculation mounts over the shape of president-elect Obama's energy policy, Al Gore laid out a multifaceted plan to make the U.S. electricity system carbon-free in 10 years.

In an opinion column published Sunday in the The New York Times, Gore said the federal government should fund projects to upgrade the nation's aging power grid and install renewable-energy sources.

"It is a plan that would simultaneously move us toward solutions to the climate crisis and the economic crisis--and create millions of new jobs that cannot be outsourced," wrote Gore, the former vice president and the … Read more

Al Gore still searching for a purpose to Web 2.0 (and his career)

At the recent Web 2.0 conference in San Francisco, Al Gore went from urging entrepreneurs to make the Web like "the water that the fish don't know they're swimming in," to wondering what the heck Web 2.0 is for, anyway, as reported by ReadWriteWeb. My thoughts exactly, except completely different.

Where does inane gobblygook like this come from?

Much like puppies, according to Mr. Gore, Web 2.0 has to have a purpose. The purpose he urges us to consider is to bring about a higher level of consciousness about our relationship with this … Read more

Web 2.0 Summit videos: Huffington, Musk, Gore

The Web 2.0 Summit wrapped up Friday with conversations about the Internet, politics, renewable energy, and space. Below are videos of on-stage talks, courtesy of TechWeb.

In a panel discussion in which The Huffington Post founder Arianna Huffington is joined by San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom and Democratic campaign organizer Joe Trippi, Huffington argues that "were it not for the Internet, Barack Obama would not be president," in part because the blogosphere has "an obsessive-compulsive disorder." Trippi agrees that "the (Internet) medium demands authenticity."

In response to Huffington's remark that "politicians … Read more
