As the organization responsible for overseeing Internet domains prepares to expand the number of top-level domains available, Al Gore is advocating for a special domain to promote environmental awareness.

Two Internet entrepreneurs have formed Dot Eco LLC for the purpose of securing the .eco domain through the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers' new gTLD application process.

The group announced Thursday at ICANN's Mexico City meeting that it has entered into an "integrated partnership" with Gore and his philanthropic organization, the Alliance for Climate Protection.

A rumor floated on the Twitter account known as The Media Is Dying--which, for obvious reasons, has been fairly active as of late--indicated on Wednesday morning that Current Media, the cable and Web media company co-founded by former Vice President Al Gore, is closing its San Francisco office. The Twitter account, which has broken a handful of accurate layoff and shutdown stories as of late, claimed that it had "confirmed" the office closing.

As speculation mounts over the shape of president-elect Obama's energy policy, Al Gore laid out a multifaceted plan to make the U.S. electricity system carbon-free in 10 years.
