LOS ANGELES -- In a launch as quiet as the electric motor that powers its wheels, Mercedes-Benz has been readying its B-class Electric Drive for sales in the summer of 2014. During the 2013 Los Angeles auto show, I joined a small group of journalists given the chance to ride along in one.
Instead of a fleet of slick vehicles prepped for the press, Mercedes-Benz only brought two examples of the B-class Electric Drive to the show. These were research vehicles that Mercedes-Benz engineers had driven for thousands of miles on public roads to collect performance data.
The B-class is … Read more
TOKYO -- It's all too easy to fall under the spell of concept cars that automakers trot out at car shows. But some make it nearly irresistible.
Nissan showed off its BladeGlider electric vehicle concept at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show on Wednesday, and it was the sickest set of wheels on the floor at Tokyo Big Sight.
One of several vehicles that seemed to be pulled from a sci-fi film (more "Tron" than "Blade Runner"), the three-seater has a knife-like shape and doors that swing up like wings. … Read more
Two gaming journo mainstays join Jeff on the show today. 20-year veteran Victor Lucas and his partner-in-crime Scott Jones pick apart the next-generation console wars and opine on what the future of gaming will and, more interestingly, will not be like.… Read more
Tesla CEO Elon Musk worked to calm fears on Tuesday that the company's all-electric Model S sedan may be prone to fires.
Speaking in an interview at The New York Times DealBook conference, Musk said that despite some bad press about three car fires in the past two months, there is no way the company needs to issue a recall on the vehicles.
"There's definitely not going to be a recall," Musk said. "There's no reason for a recall, I believe."
Musk maintained that Tesla cars are the safest automobiles on the road. … Read more
There must be something a little strange in the water at Nissan design headquarters. Over the last few years it's produced such funky models as the Juke and the Murano CrossCabriolet. And proving the point further, the company just released photos and video of the BladeGlider, a vehicle it insists is not a concept.
The BladeGlider is a three-seater vehicle with an electric drivetrain. In Nissan's press materials, it points out the BladeGlider shares engineering principles with the Leaf.
While both use lithium ion batteries, the BladeGlider gets two in-wheel motors on the rear wheels, as opposed to … Read more
Tesla owners, rabid as Apple fans, showed up in droves at an event in San Francisco to celebrate the completion of the company's West Coast Supercharger network. The stars of the event were two Model Ses in the midst of a road trip from San Diego to Vancouver.
The new Supercharger network lets Model S owners drive along the network completely free of charge.
The two cars making the journey had started out in San Diego the previous morning, making the 550-mile trip along Highway 101. Although the route planning called for four charging stops along the way, Tesla … Read more
A quadricycle is not a car. It's still got four wheels, in some cases a roof, and can be propelled down the road under its own steam. But it is not a car. The Renault Twizy is a quadricycle, a really good one, and I think it's ace.
Y'see, the little Twizy is an incredibly clever idea. It's cheap to buy (starting from £6,690 in the UK) and you needn't worry about batteries driving the price up because you lease them from Renault -- keeping the cost of the car down. It's … Read more
Electric bicycles are nothing new, but they can be loud clunky things that aren't very easy on the eyes. However, that could soon change.
A company called FlyKly is looking to remake the electric bike into something a bit more svelte. It's taking the idea of a motorized bicycle and transforming it into a simple "smart wheel."
GE claims a few industry firsts in its new line of dishwashers with an all-stainless interior. By virtue of GE's new 700 series wash system, these dishwashers are the first, says GE, with 102 distinct water jets. They're also the first with jets integrated directly into the upper rack for the purpose of washing bottles and other tall, narrow-necked vessels. Also noteworthy: GE is bringing those features to a unit that starts at $949.
The overall specs of GE's new two-rack dishwashers are typical for the price range. They all have the same 700 series wash system, … Read more
