Dolby literally to give you more 3D

The first time I bought into this this whole digital 3D thing was a 2006 showing of "Superman Returns" on an IMAX screen. In the scene, various objects floated around the screen and seemingly, right in front of my face. For me, this was the first time 3D had lived up to its promise.

If Dolby Laboratories has anything to say about it, it won't be the last. On Tuesday, the company announced that theater exhibitors will now be able to play Dolby 3D Digital Cinema content on screen sizes of up to 70 feet (42 feet … Read more

Toshiba's doing a pico projector, too

Several companies, including Toshiba, are showing off compact DLP pico projectors at the show. This one, the TDP-F10U Mobile LED Projector, may not be the sexiest-looking--or tiniest--of the bunch, but we'll throw it out there for your consideration.

The TDP-F10U weighs in at 1.4 pounds and offers SVGA, 800x600 resolution with an 800:1 contrast ratio. It will arrive in March, 2009 with a list price of $599.99. Other companies releasing pico projectors, categorized as "notebook companions," include Acer (K10), Dell (M109S), and BenQ (GP1). All of these offerings in this class weigh just over … Read more

Hands-on with WowWee's Cinemin pico projectors

Tom Merritt and I got some hands-on time with WowWee's Cinemin projectors at the CES 2009 Digital Experience showcase. Tom's First Look video can be seen on the right. For a closer look, I've included a slide show below.

To see more of the products WowWee is announcing at CES 2009, take a … Read more

Sharp's new 'value' home-theater projector: The XV-Z15000

The prices for 1080p front-projectors have gradually been coming down, and Sharp thinks it has a nice proposition for consumers in its new $3,000 XV-Z15000 projector that arrives in March.

This is a DLP projector that features a single 1080p DLP 0.65" DMD chip from Texas Instruments and what Sharp is calling "an unprecedented 30,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio and high brightness in a price-competitive model."

The XV-Z15000 offers a native resolution of 1,920 x 1,080, a 24 Hz film mode, and a six-segment, six-speed color wheel. The press release adds that, &… Read more
