Twitter CEO: 250 million tweets a day--now what?

SAN FRANCISCO--Twitter CEO Dick Costolo took to the state of Web 2.0 Summit here tonight and, in a far-reaching conversation, talked bluntly about the 5-year-old company's goals.

"We have lofty ambitions," Costolo said in a conversation with John Battelle, whose company, Federated Media, sponsors the conference. "We want to be part of the fabric over every communication in the world, and we think we can reach every person on the planet."

That goal, he said, makes Twitter distinct from what Facebook and Google+ is trying to achieve, which he described as social "as … Read more

The 404 908: Where we level up with Fitocracy (podcast)

Our guest on today's podcast episode is Dick Talens from Fitocracy.com, a social network that whips nerds into shape using role-playing mechanics and social-gaming achievements.

A self-described "ex-fat kid," Dick tells us about his high-school RPG career that developed an unhealthy lifestyle and dietary habits, and the light bulb moment when he realized he could combine his love for video games with the success of online social networks to get into shape.

Instead of typical workout routines you get from personal trainers and fitness magazines, Fitocracy takes cues from games like World of Warcraft and Chrono Trigger to present "quests" that must be completed to earn achievement points and "boosts."

After each workout, Fitocracy makes it easy to check in online, update your progress, and even send "props" to your fellow Fitocrats--the whole process is really motivating and takes the chest puffing out of your daily gym experience.

Check out today's episode to see Dick's incredible before and after photos, which should be enough to get you out of your computer chair for at least a few sit-ups. Also, the site is in private beta right now, but Dick is extending a generous invite to 404 listeners--just head to Fitocracy.com and enter in "The404" as a promo code and you'll be able to sign up ahead of everyone else.

Lesson from Steve Jobs? Make great products

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--The biggest lesson that Apple board member and longtime Steve Jobs adviser Bill Campbell learned from the former CEO? "Make sure you have great product."

Campbell, known as "Coach" to friends and some peers, may not be as known in the world of technology as he should be. The chairman of the board of Intuit, and an Apple adviser and board member who also has several other high-level tech-industry positions, appeared at the Demo Fall conference here today, in conversation with Bloomberg reporter Brad Stone.

Over the course of a 20-minute rumination on … Read more

Twitter kills wildly unpopular QuickBar

The only real surprise is that it took this long: Twitter has released an update to its iPhone app that eradicates the QuickBar, a pop-up display of rotating "trending topics" that users seemed to find almost universally annoying and nonhelpful.

Twitter claimed that people did, in fact, interact with the heavily maligned feature, which was initially released earlier this month. "Rather than continue to make changes to the QuickBar as it exists, we removed the bar from the update appearing in the App Store today," a post on the Twitter blog explained. "We believe there … Read more

Jack Dorsey rejoins Twitter executive team

"Excited that Twitter Chairman @jack will be returning to the company day-to-day leading product as Executive Chairman," Costolo's tweet read.

Dorsey came up with the original concept for Twitter--something that has been very noticeable in the company's recent fifth-birthday commemorations--and served as CEO until … Read more

The 404 771: Where the #dickbar is our totem (podcast)

We've been curious about how Twitter plans to make money off its services, and this weekend our questions were answered with one word: the dickbar. In-stream advertising has finally landed on the official Twitter iPhone app, and users will now see a top-mounted bar that shows "promoted" hashtags sponsored by advertisers who pay for the distraction.

The problem with these ads isn't that they're obtrusive or that Twitter CEO Dick Costolo initially told us they would be "organic to the platform," but that they're not specifically targeted at users, which makes sense because people use Twitter for a million different applications.

During this conversation, Wilson also reveals that he actually clicks on Google ads when he's shopping for things like headphones or, say, a house. I guess Jeff and I are so astonished at this because we're always looking for the quickest, easiest way to get rid of the annoying pop-ups.

The Gallup Healthways Well-Being Index shows, via statistical analysis of interviews with adults, that the happiest man in America is Alvin Wong: a tall, Asian-American, observant Jewish man who's at least 65 years old, married with children, lives in Hawaii, runs his own business, and has a combined annual household income of at least $120k.

We certainly have a long way to go before we achieve pure bliss!

Twitter CEO Evan Williams steps down

Twitter co-founder Evan Williams has stepped down from his role as CEO of the company, according to a post he authored Monday on Twitter's official blog. Dick Costolo, currently serving as chief operating officer, has taken over, effective immediately; Williams will focus on product strategy.

Williams, already well known in the tech industry for having sold Blogger parent company Pyra Labs to Google in 2003, had co-founded Twitter in 2006 with Biz Stone and Jack Dorsey. Initially, Dorsey served as CEO; he stepped aside almost exactly two years ago, and Williams took over. Dorsey is now on the executive … Read more
