On-the-fly encryption

As the need for greater security grows--even for home users--finding intuitive but robust solutions becomes more important. R-Crypto Disk Security fits the bill nicely for the average user. This nicely designed app provides encryption on the fly as you save data, and decryption as you open data, by creating password-protected virtual storage disks.

R-Crypto Disk Security launches a handsome interface that clearly means business, but is easy to navigate. Its features are clearly defined by the task categories listed in the navigation bar on the left and the large function pane on the right side of its window. Setting up … Read more

Misspellings tarnish app

Even though we encountered a glitch and came across several misspellings on the user interface, this encryption tool ultimately secured executable files. We just weren't persuaded that it was the best possible option.

Immediately after clicking EXE Password Lock's executable file to get started, we received an error message. Luckily, we were able to bypass it and move on to the main user interface. The designers should have used some kind of spellchecker, because we found several misspellings that would have (and should have) been caught. Still, the program was very easy to navigate, and involved simply browsing … Read more

Three-in-one file protection

This three-in-one program offers file encryption and decryption, and even throws in a file shredder. All three features worked as promised.

Kemo Data Encryption's user interface is about as straightforward as it gets, with three large buttons that quickly take you to the primary features--Encrypt, Decypt, and Shredder. Between the tutorials and extensive guidance on offer, we never had to worry about getting off on the wrong foot. The program comes with three AES encryption levels, as well three shredding methods. Encrypting files was simply a matter of adding files and folders, entering a password, and an output path. … Read more

Top-notch file encryption

Encrypting files doesn't get any easier than with PixelCryptor, which has the unique approach of using pixel data from selected images to encrypt files and folders.

The professionally designed user interface is extremely easy to navigate. Users are presented with four menu options that are displayed as icons: About, Encode Files, Decode Files, and Help. Clicking the encode button introduced a wizard-like window that walked us through the encryption process. We named our encoded file, added files and folders, selected an image to use for the encryption, and chose a destination for the encrypted file. Users also have the … Read more

Smart file encryption

After putting this encryption tool to the test, we found it one of the better ones we've seen. However, novices might find the settings options hard to decipher.

Kryptel's main user interface lists encryption and decryption options, along with backup and settings on the left side of the window. Integrated with the options are links that offer users help along the way. The program also offers drag-and-drop functionality, and access via your context menu. The Settings Panel is where the program gets a little harder to navigate. Broken down into General, Kryptel, and Shredder categories, the options are … Read more

Simple encryption tool is light on extras

This simple encryption tool worked, but if privacy is what you're looking for, you won't find it since the program isn't password-protected.

Crypturn's user interface is very straightforward. Simply browse for the file, enter and verify your key, and click OK to encrypt or decrypt the file. The program doesn't offer a Help file, only a vague three-step guide. It also doesn't offer users the choice of encryption options. When we put it to the test, it quickly and easily encrypting and decrypting files. But we found that the program itself isn't password-protected, … Read more

Too much trouble

Overly complicated operation and poorly written documentation combine to make this disk encryption tool an easy one to skip. DiskEncryptor's basic interface lacks flow, functions are logically placed, and navigation is awkward. The program's manual appears poorly translated into English. Novice users will be more confused than helped by the file.

Operating DiskEncryptor depends on various setup factors. Logical disks, partitions, and virtual disks are eligible for 256-bit AES encryption. Each setup offers individual pitfalls, but all share functions that open tabs of poorly explained options. In fairness, experienced users will have less trouble, but similar apps are … Read more

Especially handy for sending secure files

Inexperienced users will encrypt their first files seconds after installing this app, and experienced users will appreciate the program's simplicity and Blowfish security.

File Encryption XP's common folder tree and file list interface are quickly recognizable. A few function buttons sit above the list, but most users won't need them. All functions are available from the right-click menu. That makes encryption a piece of cake.

Merely right-click a folder or file and choose encrypt, or encrypt to EXE. The latter allows users to send the encrypted files to others who need only the password to decrypt the … Read more

Too long to get your bearings

It took us too long to get our bearings with the unintuitive interface this free encryption program presents. ProCypher 32 worked, but it didn't seem to merit the time spent learning how to operate it.

ProCypher 32 opened with an overwhelmingly cluttered interface. At the top of the window are the command buttons for encrypting and decrypting files, along with buttons for clearing specific fields. There's no flow to the interface element, and the User Guide was too vague to be of any help. After some experimentation, we found the button for opening a specific file is at … Read more

DVD the easy way

This DVD copier doesn't do much, but what it does, it does pretty well. Like similar programs, Easy DVD Clone copies 9GB movies by compressing them onto one 5GB DVD or splitting them onto two. It also lets you preserve space on the destination DVD by ditching extras such as bonus features and subtitles.

If you have a dual-layer drive, you can copy the entire DVD without compressing the content or leaving anything out. In our tests, Easy DVD Clone performed well and generally lived up to its name. The homely but straightforward interface shouldn't give beginners trouble, … Read more
