Inventories aren't just for shopkeepers anymore. A little time spent inventorying your valuables--electronics, cameras, antiques, appliances, furniture, artwork, tools, etc.--in your home or office will be well spent, in the case of theft, disasters, or other misfortunes. But anyone with important documents and valuable possessions worth protecting can create and maintain accurate, complete, up-to-date home, personal, and even business inventories, thanks to software like Bmg's InventoryBuilder. It simplifies the hardest part of taking inventory, going through and recording all that stuff, by doing most of the work for you.

Make slick-looking databases of just about anything

Bento is a database app from the makers of Filemaker offering plenty of great features, but its deliberate lack of focus may make it difficult for people to grasp its usefulness. Bento is loaded with templates to create databases of people, places, or things using nice-looking graphics. The interface takes some time to get used to, but with a little poking around (and once the major features become clear), the true power of Bento starts to materialize.

Bento can be used to catalog just about anything in any number of ways. Comic book collectors could use the program to catalog … Read more

Home library software

BookCAT provides all the tools necessary to track books for a professional or a home library. Its interesting options give you full control of your catalog and lending.

Although it performed a complicated task, the program's interface is surprisingly accessible. It has plenty to offer seasoned and novice librarians as well as beginning to advanced book collectors. The layout is professional and intuitive with its bright, well-labeled commands. We were instantly pleased with this program, since we were able to quickly populate our entire library by entering only each book's ISBN number. BookCAT instantly downloaded each volume's … Read more

Computer program organizer

SoftCAT offers to help organize programs that make up your computer. By cataloging everything with an easy-to-use layout, its manual input keeps this program from being brilliant.

With all commands laid out clearly and a useful example database already set up, we slid directly into navigating this program. While not hard to do, setting up a database required a great deal of information from us. Its New Entry form was not unlike filling out online paperwork by inputting Title, Publisher, Category, and its Location on our computer. Away from this primary screen, we appreciated the added tabs for more information, … Read more

Simple organizer

NotesLogExp offers to help users organize practically any bit of information into centralized location. While its design is a little boring, its simple categories are sure to help those flustered by organization.

This program is certainly not going to win any awards for its design, but this bland white screen and several entry fields are the simplest we could hope for. While we could have managed without the Help file, the insight it provided on the program's functionality made the process much smoother. We only needed to populate a new entry's many fields to start filing away information. … Read more

Useful photo organizer

ImageCD Catalog is a clever program that allows users to create libraries containing thumbnails of photographs that are stored on CDs. For photographers who tend to store images this way, ImageCD Catalog provides a quick way to find images without having to physically dig through a bunch of CDs.

The program's interface is basic and fairly intuitive, with a handful of buttons for frequently used functions and everything else organized in drop-down menus. Although not everything is intuitive--we had to check the built-in Help file to find out how to start a slideshow--for the most part the program is … Read more

Palm accepting submissions for App Catalog e-commerce beta program

In preparation for a mid-September launch of the Palm App Catalog e-commerce beta program, Palm announced on Tuesday that it is now accepting applications from developers who want to charge a one-time fee for their WebOS apps.

Developers can actually submit both free and paid applications via e-mail and if accepted into the beta program, they will have the opportunity to have their apps featured in the Palm App Catalog ahead of the next round of releases (speaking of which, when will the next round be, hmm, Palm?) and be among the first to be paid for downloaded apps.
